Performance
Affectionately called "Pepsi-cola" due to her light armor, or the "Penance-cola" or "Painsacola" due to the notion that she is a penitent for all the dastardly and evil things done by her predecessor Cleveland, the Pensacola is the first heavy cruiser within the American cruiser line---though "heavy" in this case refers strictly to her 8" guns and not to any sort of durability. The light armor of the Pensacola makes her one of the most derided cruisers of her tier, with the tendency to take heavy penetrating and citadel hits regardless of angle. A stand-up fight in Pensacola against anything larger than a destroyer will end in a pyrrhic victory at best and an instant demise at worst.
Instead, Pensacola functions best as an ambush predator. Her concealment and solid AA suite are useful tools in sneaking into a flanking position alongside an approaching enemy, whereupon Pensacola can unleash her devastating 10-gun salvo upon surprised victims. Her AP shells are particularly potent when upgraded, being able to sink cruisers that show anything resembling a broadside with just one or two well-placed salvoes. Firing over islands can also be a good way to take advantage of her firepower without risking too much damage in return. If forced to fight in the open, Pensacola can make a decent kiter with her excellent rudder shift, though she has the disconcerting habit of taking massive damage from the few shells she doesn't manage to dodge.Pros:
- Heavy salvo of 10 guns with excellent damage and ballistics
- Decent turret traverse when fully upgraded
- Solid AA, especially with Defensive Fire
- Fairly good concealment after 0.6.1
Cons:
- About as well-armored as a can of cola; frequently takes citadel hits from any angle
- Teeth-gritting stock grind

Historical Info
The USS Pensacola (CA-24), originally CL-24, was the lead ship of two 9100-ton Pensacola-class cruisers. Commissioned in February 1930, she had her first shakedown cruise from Peru to Chile from March to June 1930. She was first sent on an escort mission for a convoy from Pearl Harbor to Manila. However, due to the impending Japanese surprise attack on the convoy and Pearl Harbor, their mission diverted to Brisbane, Australia, whereafter the ship returned to Pearl Harbor. From then on, the ship would see extensive service in the Pacific theatre and eventually receive 13 battle stars for her service.
The USS Pensacola's first assignment in WWII was to join Task Force 11, which was centered around the USS Lexington (CV-2). She was to screen for the carrier during an offensive patrol in Coral Sea until Task Force 17, centered around USS Yorktown (CV-5), joined them on March 6, 1942. Then, after the combined fleet launched a surprise attack on the Japanese at Salamaua and Lae, March 10, the USS Pensacola was reassigned to TF 17 and continue patrols before returning to Pearl Harbor in April 21, 1942. In the same year, May 28, the Pensacola left as part of TF 17 with USS Enterprise (CV-6) and regroup at Midway Island. During the Battle of Midway, the Pensacola helped defend the Yorktown and shared in the downing of four Japanese torpedo bombers. Alas, the Yorktown was critically damaged during the attack and thus abandoned. After the battle, the Pensacola joined the Enterprise in the pursuit of the retreating Japanese fleet. She would later on be present at the battles of Santa Cruz Islands, Guadalcanal, and Tassafaronga, mainly to screen for carriers. And for her actions during the war, she earned a nickname among the Japanese as the "Grey Ghost".
The USS Pensacola did not have a significant post-war career. She would be used mainly as a transport for 200 men from Iwo Jima to California in November 1945 and 700 men from Guam to San Diego from December 1945 to January 1946. Afterwards, she became a target test for atomic bombs at the Bikini Atoll on July 1 and July 25 1946. She survived both tests and was taken to Kwajalein to be decommissioned August 26, 1946 and researched, before being sunk November 10, 1948.
