The first U.S. Navy cruiser built under the limitations of the Washington Naval Treaty with powerful artillery but weak armor, which was characteristic of such ships. The cruiser was armed with 203 mm main guns, on the basis of which she was re-designated as a heavy cruiser soon after commissioning. However, the ship's armor actually corresponded to that of a light cruiser.

Performance

Pensacola is the first heavy cruiser in the American cruiser branch. Due to her slow turret traverse — as slow as some battleships — it can be very difficult to keep track of targets at closer ranges and react quickly enough to enemies showing broadside. It is advised to use her high ballistic arcs to fire over small islands and not show broadside to battleships or even cruisers, as her 25 mm plating will only deflect battleship shells of 356 mm caliber or lower.

Pensacola packs a wallop. She boasts ten 203mm rifles at a tier that cruisers of most other nations are still bringing 150 or 152mm ones. Only Japanese counterpart Aoba packs guns this large, while German Premium Graf Spee goes even larger (at 283mm). Combined with the improved normalization of her armor-piercing shells, Pensacola is an extreme threat to the majority of the cruisers in her matchmaking bracket, and her HE shells are heavy enough to punish any destroyers she meets and reliably burn battleships she encounters. Pensacola has the rudder shift time to actively dodge incoming fire and medium and long range; in the hands of an attentive captain who knows how to handle her, she is deadly.

Prós:

• Excellent main battery guns; Pensacola boasts good firing angles for all ten guns and great AP penetration capabilities.
• Good anti-aircraft armament; lacks the range of American light cruiser counterpart Dallas, but makes up for it with more mid-range power.
• Outstanding maneuverability and handling characteristics.
• Sturdy armor; Pensacola can ricochet shells 356 mm or lower due to her 25 mm plating.

Contras:

• Poor large caliber AA range and damage.
• Very slow turret traverse, almost as slow as Fuso.
• Poor concealment; has the same base concealment as same tier American battleship New Mexico.
• Second slowest rate of fire of all Tier VI cruisers, only Admiral Graf Spee has a slower rate of fire.

History

The USS Pensacola (CA-24), originally CL-24, was the lead ship of two 9,100-ton Pensacola-class cruisers. Commissioned in February 1930, she had her first shakedown cruise from Peru to Chile from March to June 1930. She was first sent on an escort mission for a convoy from Pearl Harbor to Manila. However, due to the impending Japanese surprise attack on the convoy and Pearl Harbor, their mission diverted to Brisbane, Australia, whereafter the ship returned to Pearl Harbor. From then on, the ship would see extensive service in the Pacific theatre and eventually receive 13 battle stars for her service.

Design

After the end of the First World War, the U.S. Navy realized a need for a new class of cruisers that would outclass the British Hawkins-class cruisers and can operate in a large area of the Pacific. And as with most other American cruisers, Pensacola was built thrifty: lightly armored and unstable.

Design studies began as early as 1919, but because public opinion was opposed to new armaments, the U.S. Navy was forced to deliberate on seven designs (from light to heavy cruisers) until the Washington Naval Treaty was signed. Eventually, a design was founded in November 1923 and finalized in March 1925 that would become the Pensacola class.

Service

USS Pensacola’s first assignment in WWII was to join Task Force 11, which was centered around the USS Lexington (CV-2). She was to screen for the carrier during an offensive patrol in Coral Sea until Task Force 17, centered around USS Yorktown (CV-5), joined them on 6 March 1942. Then, after the combined fleet launched a surprise attack on the Japanese at Salamaua and Lae on 10 March, Pensacola was reassigned to TF 17 and continued patrols before returning to Pearl Harbor on 21 April 1942. On 28 May, Pensacola left as part of TF 17 with USS Enterprise (CV-6) and regroup at Midway Island. During the Battle of Midway, the Pensacola helped defend Yorktown and shared in the downing of four Japanese torpedo bombers. Alas, Yorktown was critically damaged during the attack and thus abandoned. After the battle, the Pensacola joined Enterprise in the pursuit of the retreating Japanese fleet. She would later on be present at the battles of Santa Cruz Islands, Guadalcanal, and Tassafaronga, mainly to screen for carriers. For her actions during the war, she earned a nickname among the Japanese as the "Grey Ghost".

Pensacola did not have a significant post-war career. She would be used mainly as a transport for 200 men from Iwo Jima to California in November 1945 and 700 men from Guam to San Diego from December 1945 to January 1946. Afterwards, she became a target test for atomic bombs at the Bikini Atoll on July 1 and July 25 1946. She survived both tests and was taken to Kwajalein to be decommissioned on 26 August 1946 and studied, before being sunk on 10 November 1948.

Historical Inaccuracies

• The in-game model is actually Salt Lake City. Hull (B) represents the ship after her 1944 refit. The tripod mainmast and searchlight platform behind turret #3 was retained on Salt Lake City, whereas both were replaced by a short tower and smaller platform respectively for Pensacola (as a result of damage received in the Battle of Tassafaronga in November 1942).
• Final refit is also missing. In June 1945, Pensacola had her tall tripod foremast cut down, a quadruple 40mm Bofors gun added at the bow, #1 and #4 turret range finders removed and the starboard catapult removed. The cruiser was also repainted in Measure 21 camouflage, overall Navy Blue (5-N) and dark Deck Blue (20-B) decks.
• Pensacola is depicted in World War II condition; its catapult fighter is in pre-war markings.
• Catapult fighter is a Grumman F3F, which was withdrawn from squadron service by the end of 1941 and was used for training and utility duties until December 1943. No floatplane version of the F3F exists.
• Salt Lake City's early Measure 5 (false bow wave) camouflage is missing.
