Galicia — Spanish Tier V cruiser.

With the establishment of the Republic, cruiser Príncipe Alfonso was renamed Libertad. When the Civil War broke out, the ship remained on the Republican side even though she was, at that time, under the command of Francisco Franco's cousin. At Cape Tenes, Libertad scored several hits on Nationalist heavy cruiser Baleares, and at Cape Palos, she engaged in battle against the enemy's heavy cruisers. The ship was later damaged during several Italian air raids. When Libertad fell into the hands of the Francoist government, she received the name Galicia.

Galicia was first released for sale on DD MMM YYYY.

Player Opinion

Performance

Warning: The data presented in the AA Defense sidebar section may be incorrect.
Refer to the in-game Port screens for more useful data.

Tier V Galicia is a stealthy cruiser with a good health pool for a light cruiser and a good range on her main battery, she is also rather unwieldy and unsuited to close range fighting.

The Ship

Galicia represents a modernized version of Tier IV Almirante Cervera and as such the two ships can often feel rather similar. A top speed of 33 knots is rather unremarkable, neither noticeably fast nor slow. However she takes a long time to reach her top speed, with one of the longest acceleration times at her tier. This slow acceleration is particularly problematic when coupled with her long rudder shift time of 8 seconds. Galicia takes a long time to respond to helm commands and is slow to regain her speed when maneuvering.

She carries a standard cruiser Damage Control PartyWhen activated, instantly repairs fires, floods, and incapacitations, and prevents more for the duration. which is active for 5 seconds with 60 seconds between uses. She also has a Hydroacoustic SearchWhile active, detects all enemy ships and torpedoes within the specified radius, without regard of obstacles such as smoke and terrain. which operates for 100 seconds with a 120 second cool down. This can be used to detect torpedoes at 3 km and ships at 4 km range.

Survivability

Galicia has a rather large health pool for a Tier V cruiser, but she does not have access to a Repair Party. This means that she is unable to recover damage taken and she lacks the maneuverability to easily avoid shots in open water.

She has a rather large citadel which stretches from her “A” turret all the way aft to “X” turret, with a large raised section between her bridge and aft structure. This means that Galicia can easily receive crippling damage from incoming fire. Her hull plating can be overmatched by 203 mm AP, although she has a long strip of 38 mm armor at the waterline on her bow. If sufficiently angled, this can bounce any AP rounds within her matchmaking spread. It does not make her immune to receiving damage whilst bow on, but it can reduce the damage she is likely to receive.

Her drawbacks are partially offset by a health pool of 27,800, one of the largest at Tier V. Her concealment is also above average, with Concealment Expert her detection range can be reduced below 9 km.

Armament

Galicia mounts a main battery of eight, 152 mm guns with a 15 km range. A reload of 9 seconds means that they fire slowly for their caliber, Galicia can struggle in a head to head DPM race with other light cruisers. She can compete with heavy cruisers, but she lacks the punch that 203 mm armed ships can bring.

Like many Tier V cruisers, Galicia tends to rely on her HE rounds. This is more due to the relative weakness of her AP than any strengths in her HE rounds. Her HE shells have a low fire chance, 8% per shell means they have the same fire chance as Konigsberg but without the improved penetration of the German ship. With a low fire chance, slow reload, and small number of guns, Galicia makes a poor fire starting ship. This can present a problem when facing heavily armored ships as she lacks the ability to reliably set multiple fires or tax the Damage Control Parties of enemy battleships. Her AP rounds are usable at short ranges against other cruisers. Their low damage per shell and long reload means that their utility is somewhat reduced.

Like her main battery, Galicia’s torpedoes are uninspiring. They have a short 6 km range, leaving them as ambush weapons, or a last ditch attempt to land some damage. Unfortunately, their short range is matched by a low damage per torpedo and a small salvo size. They also reload slowly for their salvo size, at 88 seconds to reload each launcher Galicia has the worst sustained torpedo damage at her tier.

Anti-Air

Galicia is one of several cruisers at Tier V with no long range AA defenses or flak. Whilst this does not put her at any particular disadvantage, her AA is only suitable for self defense and will do little to dissuade enemy carrier attacks. Her guns will not begin to engage enemy aircraft until they are within 3.5 km, with most of her damage being caused when the aircraft close to within 2 km.

Anti-Submarine

Galicia carries an ASW airstrike with a 5 km range, potentially allowing her to engage submarines with a degree of safety. The airstrike has a 20 second reload between attacks, limiting the amount of damage that players can cause to a submarine. As she also lacks a Hydroacoustic Search, players will need to rely on friendly support to locate submarines.

Battle Performance

Galicia will reward patient play, her damage output relies on players staying alive and chipping away at enemy ships rather than causing large amounts of damage in a short period of time. Her excellent concealment and good health pool can assist in this, although the ship can be prone to sudden deletion syndrome common to low tier cruisers. Her concealment means that in cruiser engagements, Galicia can often decide the terms of the fight.

Even more so than other cruisers, Galicia functions best as a support ship. Her DPM and fire starting chances are unspectacular, but they can provide a boost to friendly forces.

Pros:

  • Good concealment
  • Good health pool
  • Surprisingly tanky armor

Cons:

  • Low DPM from all weapons
  • Low fire starting potential
  • Poor maneuverability

Research

Researchable upgrades for Galicia:

  1. Hull: Upgrade to Hull (B) for improved survivability, maneuverability and AA. Research of this module unlocks progression to Baleares.
  2. Gun Fire Control System: Upgrade to SCI Mk V Mod. 2 for an extra 10% range on the main battery.
