München — German premium Tier VII cruiser.

The German plan provided for the presence of thirteen light cruisers, six of which had already been built by the beginning of 1939. There were plans to add six more cruisers with an enhanced design. Unlike the preceding classes, they were supposed to have an improved range and higher speed. In 1938 and 1939, six ships were ordered, two of which were laid down in Kiel and Wilhelmshaven in 1938. In September 1939, the construction of the ships was canceled due to the outbreak of World War II, and all laid-down cruisers were demolished on the stocks.

München first was released for sale on 11 Sep 2020.

Performance

München is a Tier VII premium German light cruiser armed with rapid fire 150 mm guns. While the German tech tree transitions towards heavy cruisers starting at tier VII with Yorck, München continues the playstyle of the lower tier light cruisers with smaller caliber guns and light armor protection.

Armament:

Like many other German light cruisers, München carries 150 mm main guns with ¼ HE penetration and high damage AP shells. She has eight guns housed in four twin turrets that have a good range of 16.6 km. These guns fire fast with a base reload speed of 5 seconds but due to the low HE alpha, her HE damage per minute is unimpressive compared to her peers. While her AP damage per minute is quite good, the shells lose penetration over distance very quickly and with her bad shell velocity can be hard to utilize properly.

Torpedoes are also present on München and serve as a self defense tool due to their low range of 6 km. 4 torpedoes are mounted on each side of the ship with decent launch angles. However, due to the fragile armor scheme, players should not seek to use torpedoes at close range often.

Hull:

Armor is not a strong suit for München with her 16 mm bow/stern and 20 mm side plating. While she does have a 25 mm deck, most battleships of her tier will easily penetrate/overmatch. The citadel armor scheme does not save München due to very thin armor plates protecting her citadel. Alongside her small health pool of 30,200, it is best to not be hit at all which is achievable through her other characteristics.

Maneuverability is what allows München to negate damage and the weaknesses of poor armor. With a fast base speed of 36 knots and tight turning radius, dodging shells at long range is easily achievable. With a very good minimum concealment of 9.43 km, München can decide when most engagements start and finish.

Consumables:

München carries the German Hydroacoustic Search consumable which has improved 5.5 km ship acquisition range. This allows her to play around key areas, spotting enemy ships and torpedoes, as well as negating smoke screens at close ranges.

A Fighter consumable is available as well, providing air cover for 60 seconds. Against enemy aircraft carriers, the consumable should be used 5-10 seconds before being struck by aircraft to ensure they tag and deal damage. The fighter can also be used to spot enemy ships over islands.

Anti-Aircraft:

Although she is a light cruiser, München’s Anti-Aircraft capabilities are poor. Alongside low dps values, she only has 5.2km AA range and 1 flak cloud. She cannot deal with tier VI carriers alone and is unable to stop tier VIIIs. Grouping with allied ships to overlap anti-aircraft auras is recommended in games with carriers.

Battle Performance:

Players used to the German cruiser tech tree will find München’s play style largely familiar, relying on kiting enemy ships and avoiding damage through dodging. An advantage to München is her excellent maneuverability and handling, allowing her to easily dodge at range.

Due to her bad gun arcs, playing behind islands to remain concealed is also an option on maps that allow for it. While her HE dpm is not much higher compared to the tech tree light cruisers, her high penetration of 38 mm allows her to consistently penetrate battleships at her tier alongside lighting fires. At closer ranges, her AP shells should be used against targets showing broadside.

Overall, München is a solid kiting cruiser where performance largely depends on the player's ability to dodge and output consistent damage at range.

Pros:

  • Low concealment
  • HE shells have ¼ penetration
  • Good AP dpm
  • Great gun range
  • 6 km torpedoes
  • 5.5 km Hydroacoustic SearchWhile active, detects all enemy ships and torpedoes within the specified radius, without regard of obstacles such as smoke and terrain.

Cons:

  • Low HE alpha and dpm
  • AP shells lose penetration quickly over distance
  • Bad shell velocity
  • Poor anti-aircraft defenses
  • 16 mm nose and 20 mm sides are easily overmatched
  • Poorly armored citadel
