Special

Leipzig — German special premium Tier VI cruiser.

The Leipzig-class were a pair of light cruisers built for the German Reichsmarine and later the Kreigsmarine between 1928 and 1934. They were improvements over the preceding Königsberg-class cruisers, having improved armor and a completely centerline turret arrangement. Leipzig was the first of the pair laid down April 28th, 1928 and launched October 18th, 1929. Leipzig served in World War II and spent most of her time in the Baltic, including serving as the flagship of the training fleet. After the war, she would spend some time clearing mines before being scuttled in July 1946 due to her poor condition.

Leipzig was first released for sale on 22 September 2023.

The Ship

Leipzig is an offshoot from her tech tree sister Nurnberg with a slightly smaller hull. She retains several similarities to her sister, but trades reload time, firing range, and 360-degree rotation on her rear turrets for improved concealment and torpedo range.

Leipzig has a thin hull that is mostly covered in 16 mm plating along the sides and ends, which can be overmatched by any battleship and even some cruisers that she meets. Her center deck is 25 mm thick, which can bounce up to 356 mm AP shells but should not be relied upon to save her. Her citadel is located at the water line and easy to miss because of its small size, but is easily penetrated by even cruiser AP shells when hit. From her forward superstructure to her rear turret, she has a turtleback behind her main belt that can protect her citadel from lower caliber cruiser and destroyer AP shells. However, from the front superstructure to her first turret, her citadel is exposed along the side plating. Overall her armor is quite weak, and she should not expect to survive a long firefight.

Leipzig is slightly more maneuverable than her sister but not by a clearly noticeable amount. Her base speed is 32 knots with a 700 m turning circle. Her base rudder shift is 7.3 seconds and she has a hitpoint pool of 26,200. Her concealment is excellent at 9.7 km base, while using Concealment Expert it can be lowered to 8.7 km.

Armament

Leipzig carries nine 150 mm guns in three triple turrets in an A-XY layout, with two turrets facing aft and one turret facing forward. Unlike Nurnberg and Königsberg, Leipzig’s rear turrets cannot rotate 360 degrees, so captains will need to be more mindful of their location when changing targets. She also has less range, only 13.5 km rather than 16.5. She is able to fire both AP and HE shells. Her shells have the same characteristics found on most German 150 mm guns, with high velocity at short range but a bit lofty at medium to long range. Her AP shells do not have as much penetration as the USN or Russian 152 mm guns, but have some of the highest alpha for their caliber. Her AP shells are able to do large amounts of damage quickly to any ship that shows a flat side to her. Her HE shells have lower alpha than her counterparts but have 38 mm of penetration, allowing her to penetrate most hull plating without the need to take Inertial Fuse for HE Shells. Her damage per minute values are low for a Tier VI light cruiser as her reload is 7.9 seconds.

Leipzigis one of the few cruisers at Tier VI that can use her torpedoes offensively. She has four triple torpedo launchers, two per side, with wide launching angles. Her torpedoes differ from the German tech tree cruisers by having a 10 km range. She is able to stealth launch them without any concealment upgrades, and has a 1.3 km window to launch from stealth with maximum concealment. Her torpedoes can be used as an offensive primary weapon or as a deterrent against charging vessels. Her 68 second reload gives her plenty of chances to land hits and deal large amounts of damage to even Tier VIII vessels.

Consumables

Leipzig has a similar consumable set to her sisters, but she can take Hydroacoustic SearchWhile active, detects all enemy ships and torpedoes within the specified radius, without regard of obstacles such as smoke and terrain. and Defensive AA FireWhile active, the damage per second of large caliber anti-aircraft guns is increased. simultaneously. She has access to Damage Control PartyWhen activated, instantly repairs fires, floods, and incapacitations, and prevents more for the duration., Hydroacoustic SearchWhile active, detects all enemy ships and torpedoes within the specified radius, without regard of obstacles such as smoke and terrain., Defensive AA FireWhile active, the damage per second of large caliber anti-aircraft guns is increased., and a Catapult FighterWhile active, a group of fighter planes circles the ship providing protection by attacking incoming enemy aircraft.. The Hydroacoustic Search is the standard German version with increased ship and torpedo detection range. Her good concealment and long range sonar make it easier to spot hidden vessels than most ships, and can be used to offensively hunt isolated destroyers.

Anti-Aircraft

Leipzig has below average AA damage, but has access to both a Catapult Fighter and Defensive AA Fire. Her short, mid, and long range auras extend out to 2, 3.5, and 4.6 km respectively. Her continuous damage is low on every aura and alone they will struggle to damage planes. She does have a better chance to defend herself from planes than her sister by always having access to Defensive AA Fire, and she can also use her Catapult Fighter to deter strikes if she is focused for an attack run. Captains will need to time the use of her consumables carefully when defending against aircraft, as she is vulnerable if both her consumables are on cooldown.

Battle Performance

Leipzig’s play style emphasizes using her like a large destroyer. Her short main battery range and long reload make her a poor damage farmer. Her low detection, increased torpedo range, and short torpedo reload give her a lot of flexibility to launch torpedoes at unsuspecting ships. She is best played in a position where she can blunt an adversary’s push, usually on a flank or somewhat centrally located where she can sail parallel to a charge.

Similar to Nurnberg and Konigsburg, her hull plating is thin with a vulnerable citadel. Battleships and heavy cruisers can easily punch through her armor, and she does not have the hit points to survive a sustained firefight for long. She should remain undetected as long as possible and must take care not to overextend.

When using her main guns she must be conservative when picking her fights, as she does not fare favorably in a one-on-one with most cruisers in her tier. It's best to use her concealment and powerful AP to pick off low HP targets when the opportunity presents itself. She shines when assisted by an allied destroyer; taking advantage of allied smoke screens that can bring her into the range where she can surprise an enemy destroyer and quickly send them back to port.

Pros:

Cons:

  • Large above-water citadel and thin hull plating.
  • Slow main battery reload.
  • Short main battery range, only 13.5 km.
  • Poor AA defenses.

Research

As a premium ship, Leipzig has no module upgrades to research.

Optimal Configuration

Leipzig should be tailored toward improving her concealment and survivability first, then the second priority should go to her main battery. However, a captain can also choose to improve her torpedo armament if they wish to use them primarily.

Upgrades

The recommended upgrades are:

Consumables

Leipzig equips the following consumables:

Camouflage

As a premium ship, Leipzig comes with Default permanent camouflage and a set of permanent combat bonuses.
