Player Opinion
Pros and Cons
Pros:
- The first researchable vehicle with Automatic Reloader mechanism, has 3-shot clip with top turret
- Good overall gun stats: decent accuracy, good handling, shell velocity and penetration
- Extremely powerful top engine giving great mobility
- Relatively heavy weight for a medium (46 tonnes) plus high speed makes ramming a viable tactic against lighter targets
Cons:
- Spending more than 1 shot from the clip will cause drastic drop in DPM
- Horrible stock grind: combines subpar gun stats from the previous tank with low mobility, also only 2 shots in clip
- Somewhat mediocre Camouflage value with big silhouette, low view range for the size (a good crew negates this)
- Very weak armour, can't really bounce anything except for lower tiers
- Armor layout is roughly equal to the Panther but gun mantlet is even weaker, and also a tier higher.
Performance
The first Italian style semi-auto reloader with a flexible playstyle, due to its ability to fire and reload single-shot style or to empty the clip but suffer from low DPM while the clip is dry. Good mobility and gun stats allow the tank to switch freely between the role of sniper or flanker. The tank should however never rely on its armor to linger around the front, thus mobility, timing and awareness have to be utilised to survive. Compared to the premium Progetto 46, it has 20% slower in-clip reload, a bit worse gun depression & terrain resistance as a trade off for marginally thicker armor and higher engine power.
- Note: As of Update 1.10, or Equipment 2.0, the P.44 Pantera has had its ability to equip a gun rammer removed, along with all other Italian Autoreloaders. However, the premium Progetto 46 has had its reload speed increased to about the levels with a rammer to compensate.
Early Research
Mount the radio from the P.43 ter when you unlock the tank - nothing else transfers. The 3rd round in the auto-reloader is only unlocked if you use the top turret so start progressing the next gun and then turret. The tracks are not needed to mount suggested equipment (Optics, Vert Stabs and Medium Rammer) and all modules but you will need them if you use vents instead of optics and the default engine (which is heavier than both upgraded blocks).

Historical Info
In 1942, Italy was struggling to play catch-up ball with its armor force compared to the Crusaders, Matildas, and Shermans it was fighting. While multiple native designs were being planned, a simpler solution was also on the table--licensing designs from their technologically advanced German allies. This was in fact done--while the Panzer 4 would have been more suited to the state of the Italian Army, they opted to future-proof by licensing the Panther instead.
This proved problematic for Italy's industry; while extensive work had been done by the capitulation in 1943 on getting production started, from-scratch production of the Panther was estimated to not be plausible until 1945. Additionally, while the Germans were prepared to supply partially completed Panthers to Italy, this would not include the tank's guns--one of the most time-consuming parts to build, and one which the turret had been built specifically for and would require significant retooling to make work with a different gun.
A number of hypothetical solutions were available, however. Italy's superb Canonen de 90/53 anti-aircraft gun had already been selected for conversion into the main cannon for the P.43 bis prototype; replacing the Panther's turret with the P.43's was a plausible solution, which would chop down the time of construction for both tanks.
