Commander Bio:Anton Gurin (1910-1962) was a Rear Admiral of the Soviet Navy (1951). He joined the navy in 1928 and, after graduating from naval school, served on submarines for several years. In 1938, he became commander of the Soviet destroyer Gremyashchy, and, one year later, both he and his ship were transferred from the Baltic Sea to the North. He spent the Great Patriotic War as a part of the Northern Fleet, which gained significant strategic importance when Arctic convoys began to emerge. Gurin embarked on more than 100 cruises, initially as the commander of Gremyashchy, and subsequently as a commander of the 1st Destroyer Division. During this period, he conducted raids against enemy communications and supported Soviet military operations with artillery fire. He also took part in escorting many allied convoys, which he defended from both German aircraft and submarines. For his part in this, he was awarded the Navy Cross. In July 1945, he was further awarded the title of "Hero of the Soviet Union" for his numerous heroic feats during the war. |
