Commander Bio:Charles Madden (1862-1935) was an admiral of the Fleet of the Royal Navy (1924). "This officer has no defects" wrote one colleague about Madden. He joined the Navy at 12 years old, and first saw action in 1882 during the Anglo-Egyptian War. After that, he spent two decades serving on a wide range of ships in various parts of the British Empire, becoming a renowned weapons expert in the process. Eventually, he was asked to join the Ship Design Committee responsible for the famous HMS Dreadnought. It was Madden who became one of the first commanding officers of this truly revolutionary battleship. In August 1914, when World War I began, he was appointed as Chief of Staff for John Jellicoe, who commanded the Grand Fleet at that time. The pride and joy of the British Empire-dreadnought battleships-were a vital part of that fleet. Being a talented planner and an extremely hard-working person, Madden was one of the key leaders of Royal Navy operations in the North Sea for more than two years-a period that included the famous Battle of Jutland. At the end of 1916, he was given command of the 1st Battle Squadron and became second-in-command of the Grand Fleet. In 1919, when the war was over, Madden was appointed to the command of the newly established Atlantic Fleet, with his flag raised on battleship HMS Queen Elizabeth. In 1927, he received a top appointment to the Royal Navy officer as a First Sea Lord. |
