Commander Bio:Reinhard Scheer (1863-1928) was an Admiral in the Imperial German Navy (1916) who led the German fleet in the Battle of Jutland. At the beginning of his career, Scheer spent several years in the East Africa Squadron. Upon his return to Germany, he devoted himself to the study of torpedo fire, soon becoming a prominent specialist in this new type of weaponry. For several years, Scheer worked in the Torpedo Section of the Imperial Naval Office. This talented officer quickly worked his way up, commanding a cruiser, a battleship, and attaining a senior rank early in his career. A few months after the beginning of World War I, Scheer was given command of a squadron of the newest Kaiser-class and König-class battleships, and in January 1916, he took the lead of the High Seas Fleet, the main force of the Imperial Navy. Being a harsh advocate of strict discipline in terms of maritime strategy, Reinhard Scheer was a supporter of aggressive warfare, employing all available means of defeating the enemy, including air and underwater strikes. The actions of the fleet under Scheer's command became more and more aggressive. It was he who commanded the German forces in the largest battle of dreadnought battleships-the Battle of Jutland. Maneuvering flawlessly, like a well-olled machine, Scheer's fleet was able to inflict greater losses on the enemy and avoid the trap that the Grand Fleet had prepared for them. |
