Commander Bio:Nobutake Kondō (1886-1953) was an admiral in the Imperial Japanese Navy (1943). The future naval commander graduated from the Imperial Japanese Navy Academy at the head of his class in 1907 and participated in World War I. Upon graduation from the Naval Staff College, Kondő held a number of key positions in the Navy General Staff, and commanded battlecruiser Kongõ. Later, he was Chief of Staff of the Combined Fleet, and Commander of the 5th Fleet. Being a powerful figure in the navy, the admiral supported traditional battleship tactics, seeing the main force of the fleet in armored ships with powerful artillery. At the beginning of the Pacific War, admiral Kondo headed the 2nd Fleet and was one of the key figures in the swift and victorious Japanese offensive. He led the naval forces in the invasions of Malaya, the Philippines and the Dutch East Indies, bringing a series of crushing defeats to the Allies. Admiral Kondo was in command of the Japanese forces in the Battle of the Eastern Solomons (August 1942) and the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands (October 1942), which ended in heavy casualties for both sides. Since the autumn of 1942, he had been the Deputy Commander of the Combined Fleet and was appointed to the Supreme War Council at the end of the war. |
