Commander Bio:Stepan Osipovich Makarov (1848-1904) was a Vice Admiral of the Imperial Russian Navy (1896). One of the most famous Russian naval commanders, a talented explorer, traveler, and inventor, he first stepped aboard a ship at the age of 12. During his life, Makarov made many long voyages, completed a circumnavigation of the globe and took part in an expedition to the Arctic. During the Russo-Turkish War in 1878, he successfully executed a torpedo attack in combat conditions for the first time in history. During peacetime, Makarov was constantly working on maritime causes. He brought fundamental improvements to the design of AP shells, developed a host of measures that would help resist the flooding of ships, and promoted the spread of radio communications across the fleet. In the 1890s, the admiral was a Chief Inspector of Naval Ordinance and commanded the Baltic squadron, where new tactics and technical solutions were tested. At the beginning of the Russo-Japanese War, he was appointed as the commander of the squadron in the Pacific Ocean. Makarov inspired his subordinates with his energy and wasn't afraid to confront the Japanese fleet, despite its superior strength. During one such operation, his battleship detonated a mine and the admiral went down together with his ship. |
