Commander Bio:Franz von Hipper (1863-1932) was an Admiral of the Imperial German Navy (1918), and one of the most renowned German fleet commanders. Hipper began his naval career at the age of sixteen. During his fleet service, he mastered the art of gunnery and torpedo firing. He commanded several squadrons of torpedo boats and a wide range of new armored cruisers. Hipper was considered one of the best ship commanders of his time. In 1913, Hipper already had a senior rank and took command of the I Scouting Group, which consisted of the fastest and the most powerful battlecruisers. The squadron of Hipper took part in two of the most significant battles of World War I-the Battle of Dogger Bank (January 1915) and the Battle of Jutland (May-June 1916). It was thanks to the decisive and skillful actions of the admiral and the exceptionable survivability and accuracy of his cruisers that the reconnaissance forces of the High Seas Fleet were able to win the toughest of battles. The most severe loss of the Royal Navy in the Battle of Jutland-three battlecruisers-was caused by Admiral Hipper's squadron. During the final stages of the war, the admiral was appointed as the commander of the High Seas Fleet-the main force of the German Imperial Navy. |
