Commander Bio:Günther Lütjens (1889-1941) was an Admiral of the Kriegsmarine (1940). He joined the navy at the age of 17, and was appointed as the instructor of future officers several years later. During World War I, he served in torpedo boat flotillas and took part in a large number of operations. During the Inter-War Period, Lütjens served in Naval Command and was responsible for training new personnel for the growing fleet. He spent several years commanding a light cruiser, and later became a destroyer commander. Enigmatic, short-spoken, but devoted to his duty, Lütjens had an impeccable reputation and indisputable authority. When World War II began, Lütjens took command of the Scouting Forces consisting of all light cruisers and destroyers of the Kriegsmarine. He led raids to British shores, then raised his flag on battleship Gneisenau, covering landings in Norway. In the summer of 1940, Lütjens was appointed as Fleet Commander. Between January and March of 1941, he led Scharnhorst-class battleships and successfully raided the Atlantic, seriously disrupting British communications. In May of the same year, the admiral raised his flag on the new battleship Bismarck and attempted yet another breakthrough to the ocean. In the Battle of the Denmark Strait, he crushed the enemy squadron that was trying to intercept him. The pride of the Royal Navy-HMS Hood was sank. Several days later, the admiral and Bismarck were destroyed in an unequal battle against the British fleet. |
