Commander Bio:Ding Ruchang (1836-1895) was a Chinese naval commander and admiral. He joined the navy in the mid-1870s, having gained extensive experience in the land forces by that time. He was one of the main proponents of transforming the country's naval forces as per the European model and equipping them with steam-powered armored ships. Under Ding Ruchang's command, the northern Beiyang Fleet comprised two large battleships, several cruisers, and destroyers built at the best European shipyards. He also put huge effort into developing the military industry in China, creating a system of naval bases, and organizing coastal defenses. In the summer of 1894, war with Japan broke out. Ding Ruchang was, de facto, put in charge of the entire Qing Empire fleet. In September, his squadron, while heading out to sea to cover a landing operation, encountered the main forces of the Japanese Navy at the mouth of the Yalu River. A fierce battle ensued, and the Beiyang squadron suffered heavy losses but was able to ensure the landing. At the end of this ill-fated war, Ding Ruchang commanded the defense of Weihaiwei. The forces of the defenders were wearing thin after countless battles, and the admiral managed to agree honorable conditions for the garrison's surrender, but he decided not to live on himself. |
