Commander Bio:William Halsey (1882-1959) was a fleet admiral of the United States Navy (1945) and one of the most famous commanders of the American fleet. During the first decades of his career, he served mostly on destroyers, preferring them to "ponderous" battleships. He took part in World War I, joining the ranks of those who supported carrier-based aircraft in the 1930s, and even becoming the most aged officer in the history of the United States Navy to qualify as a Naval Aviator.
During World War II, he was the commander of aircraft carrier Enterprise, the forces of the South Pacific Area, and the commander of the Third Fleet--the largest fleet of the United States Navy. Halsey was leading hit-and-run raids on Japanese bases, coordinating the Allied forces in the violent Solomon Islands campaign, and little by little marching toward victory. Energetic, aggressive, and unpredictable, he was the man who was able to break down the Japanese and ensure the victory of the United States in the Pacific.
