Commander Bio:Takeo Takagi (1892-1944) began his naval service in 1911, and was an admiral in the Imperial Japanese Navy (1944). He completed a specialized course in torpedo warfare and graduated from the Naval Staff College. Later, he served as an instructor in military educational establishments. Takeo Takagi successively commanded several submarines and cruisers, as well as battleship Mutsu. From the late 1930s, the admiral was in service in the Navy General Staff. Shortly before Japan joined World War II, Takagi was assigned command of a division of Myōkō-class heavy cruisers. At the start of the war, the admiral, heading a powerful squadron formed on the basis of his cruiser division, supported the invasion of the Philippine Islands and Dutch East Indies. In late February 1942, Takagi defeated a squadron of Australian, Dutch and British ships in the Battle of the Java Sea, and went on to destroy what remained of it several days later. The Allied Naval Forces didn't pose any threat at that front any longer, and the cautious admiral achieved it with minimal casualities, having proved the complete superiority of the Japanese Navy over the enemy, not only in terms of artillery and torpedo power, but also coherence and training of the crews. Furthermore, Takeo Takagi commanded a carrier task force, participated in the Battle of the Coral Sea, and was in charge of the 6th Fleet. He was reported missing in action during the Battle of Saipan in July 1944. |
