Commander Bio:Admiral of the Fleet John Fisher (1841-1920) was an outstanding reformer of the British Navy, attaining his esteemed rank in 1905. Although he embarked on his naval journey during the era of sailing ships, he retired in the age of dreadnoughts and submarines, and even played a vital role in their emergence. Throughout the first decades of his career, "Jacky" Fisher (as he was called) participated in campaigns in the Baltic, Egypt, and Far East, honing his expertise in navigation, artillery, and torpedo technology.
Thanks to his knowledge and vigor, Fisher contributed significantly to the modernization of the British Fleet in every role he undertook. He was extraordinarily strict with his subordinates, but appreciative of personal initiative, which helped him revolutionize the officer corps of the Royal Navy through innovative reforms, effectively preparing it for contemporary conflicts. While overseeing the naval base in Portsmouth, he significantly reduced ship construction and repair times. Fisher believed that speed and firepower were a ship's most important qualities, which inspired him to pioneer the integration of rapid-firing artillery and turbine engines into Royal Navy ships. |
