Commander Bio: 

Lev Mikhailovich Galler (1883-1950) was an Admiral of the Soviet Navy (1940). Galler earned his first officer rank after completing Naval school in 1905, and undertook additional artillery training soon after. During the years of World War I, he took part in combat operations of the Baltic fleet. Galler was a squadron gunnery officer of the battleship division, a commander of an Izyaslav-class destroyer, and an executive officer of a battleship.

After the revolution of 1917, he took the side of the Reds. He actively took part in establishing the fleet of the Soviet State, and at the turn of the 1930s, he commanded a battleship division that included all soviet dreadnoughts. After that, he commanded the Baltic Fleet for several years. From the end of the 1930s, Galler played a key role in the Soviet Navy command. He occupied several posts, including Chief of Naval Staff, and became the mentor and right-hand man for the young and gifted People's Commissar of the Navy, Kuznetsov. Having a vast knowledge, a wealth of experience, expertise in all fields, and sacrificing all of his energy to the service, Admiral Galler made a huge contribution to making the Soviet Navy effective both before and during the Great Patriotic War.
