Commander Bio: 

Andrew Cunningham (1883-1963) was a Fleet Admiral of the Royal Navy (1943) and one of the most famous military leaders of World War II. He joined the navy when he was just 14, and at 17 years old he took part in the Boer War. Later, in World War I, he demonstrated remarkable leadership skills commanding a destroyer. Moving swiftly up through the ranks, Cunningham constantly improved his knowledge and grew up in his command roles. Little by little, he came to be regarded as one of the most competent serving naval officers. During the summer of 1939, Cunningham was made Commander-in-Chief of the Mediterranean Fleet, hoisting his flag on the battleship Warspite. The victories he achieved during the struggle for the Mediterranean against the Italian-German forces would make the history books. In November 1940, over the course of one carefully planned night operation, British naval aviation destroyed half of the Italian battleship fleet in the Battle of Taranto. In March 1941, the admiral crushed the Italians in the Battle of Cape Matapan, having sunk the whole enemy cruiser squadron. When the Mediterranean campaign was won, in the autumn of 1943, Cunningham became First Sea Lord. For the remainder of the war, he was responsible for Royal Navy operations in all theaters.
