Special

S-189 — Soviet special premium Tier VIII submarine.

Project 613 is the most-produced series of Soviet Navy submarines and was built based on experience gained during World War II. The boat was capable of operating underwater for extended periods of time.

S-189 was first released for sale with the release of Update 0.11.9 on 05 October 2022, initially available in 1 of 54 random doubloon bundles in the Armory. She was added to the Armory and Premium Shop permanently on 17 March 2023.

Player Opinion

Performance

S-189 is one of the first premium submarines introduced into the game. Compared to her peers, she places a heavier emphasis on close-ranged attacks, and also has an enhanced Submarine SurveillanceDetect submarines underwater. consumable.

Hull

As with most submarines, S-189’s survivability is not her strong point. Her HP pool is small, barely above 14,000. Her armor is essentially non-existent, with her exterior hull reaching only 19 mm. Captains should be careful not to get caught exposed in her, or they may find themselves quickly back in port.

On the other hand, S-189’s maneuverability and concealment are among the best of Tier VIII submarines. Her turning circle and rudder shift are quite good, albeit mostly standard for her tier. Her concealment, at 5.5 km, is the best concealment at her tier. Finally, she has a good 30 knot top speed on the surface. Her 21 knot speed underwater is the second fastest of all Tier VIII submarines (after Alliance), which typically go 13-17 knots underwater. This allows her to more easily evade enemies, especially with Enlarged Propellor Shaft.

S-189’s Dive Capacity recharge and depletion rate are standard for her tier, at 1 units/sec for the former and 0.8 units/s for the latter. Her Dive Capacity reserve is above average, at 250 units base, allowing her to stay underwater for slightly more than four minutes.

Armament

S-189’s sonar is a mixed bag. Her ping velocity is very high, allowing her to quickly acquire targets to enable homing. Her sonar range is also decent at 9 km. On the other hand, her sonar reload and ping width are worst-in-tier, at 9.5 seconds and a measly 8 m width respectively. In addition, while her first ping duration is standard, her second ping duration against the same sector is only five seconds longer (30 s vs 25 s). Landing double pings can prove a challenge. These factors mean homing is not S-189’s strong point, and her homing capability should rarely be used against surface ships.

Homing Torpedoes

S-189’s homing torpedoes further compound her weakness in homing attacks. The torpedoes have a respectable 9 km range. But with only 5,167 damage, low flooding chance and a rather slow speed of 64 knots, they are mostly useful for shotgunning[1] low HP targets and destroyers, due to their short arming distance. Their homing capability will shine against submarines, due to her unique Submarine SurveillanceDetect submarines underwater., though her sonar performance is subpar.

Conventional Torpedoes

S-189’s conventional torpedoes are her main weapon. While their flooding chance is barely better than her homing torpedoes, they feature high damage and long range for their type, at 16,367 and 12.3 km respectively. With four bow tubes, a full salvo is enough to heavily cripple or destroy almost any ship they connect with. Her two stern tubes can deliver an immediate follow-up strike, albeit with half the punch. In combination with her concealment, she is a capable shotgunning submarine. While her torpedo tubes have a long reload of 61 seconds, she has a loader for each tube.

Consumables

S-189 has a standard Damage Control PartyWhen activated, instantly repairs fires, floods, and incapacitations, and prevents more for the duration., with three stock charges and a 15 second duration time. Captains should be careful not to quickly exhaust their limited charges or she will find herself helpless against fuel spills and floods. Her HydrophoneWhile submerged, highlights the terrain and positions of surface ships beyond the spotting range. is identical to same-tier and lower German submarines. It is useful in tracking the location of surface ships while underwater.

Where S-189 stands out is her Submarine SurveillanceDetect submarines underwater.. Sharing the same range as her German counterparts, her version features better preparation time and reload, at 290 and 80 seconds respectively. This gives her the upper hand when engaged in anti-submarine combat.

Gameplay

S-189 is primarily a shotgunning[1] submarine. Captains should use her concealment and speed to close the distance on an ideally isolated target. Primary targets are battleships and cruisers. Once at a close range, around 6 km, captains should dive to periscope depth to further close the distance. Right before being proximity detected, she can launch her full spread of conventional torpedoes and quickly dive to avoid detection. Her underwater speed will help her in repositioning for follow-up attacks. Against destroyers, homing torpedoes should be used as they have a short arming distance. Their slow speed may allow destroyers to avoid them just in time, however, so captains should make sure to be close and aim properly. Captains can also ping destroyers at close range to help guarantee hits from their homing torpedoes, given that the homing shut off distance against destroyers is only 440 m for single pings of Tier VIII submarines.[2] If unable to get to point-blank range, captains can attack ships from 5-8 km away, circling around to launch both the bow and stern torpedoes.

Against enemy submarines, her enhanced Submarine SurveillanceDetect submarines underwater. consumable often will give her the first strike against them. In the early game especially, enemy submarines may find themselves blind against S-189, due to their longer preparation time on the consumable. Though S-189’s short ping duration and low homing torpedo damage output may hamper her direct ability in dealing with submarines, the information she provides to her team will be invaluable for their potential ASW attacks.

S-189 favors "high risk, high reward" game play compared to her peers. Those who can learn her play style will appreciate her characteristics, namely her concealment, maneuverability and powerful conventional torpedoes. The tools she has access to allow her to remain a threat to both surface ships and submarines.

Pros:

  • Fast sonar ping velocity
  • Torpedo tubes reload independent of each other
  • Conventional torpedoes have high damage and range
  • Good Dive Capacity reserve and decent underwater speed
  • Good concealment
  • Submarine SurveillanceDetect submarines underwater. has reduced preparation and reload time, and long range

Cons:

  • On the smaller end of HP for Tier VIII submarines
  • Long sonar reload
  • Short second ping duration
  • For their type, homing torpedoes are slow and deal low damage.
