Ochakov — Soviet special premium Tier VIII cruiser.
Preliminary designs for several light cruisers were developed in 1950. One of them was armed with four BL-115 twin turrets. The designers managed the displacement efficiently through the arrangement of the main artillery armament. However, the nation's facilities were loaded with the construction of other ships at that time, so the projects didn't progress any further.
Ochakov was first released for sale in Update 0.9.4.

The Ship
Ochakov is a Tier VIII Russian premium light cruiser that is best understood as a Smolensk hull combined with a weaponry and consumable suite similar to Alexander Nevsky. While this combination offers a stealthy, speedy, and tactically flexible platform, the lack of survivability and poor main battery range will force Ochakov captains to evaluate the risks and rewards of their intended actions with care. Unlike the long-range damage dealers that are the upper tiers of the Russian light cruiser tech tree, Ochakov is better understood as a sneaky radar support ship and glass cannon.
Armor and Survivability
Although the hull visually resembles that her Tier X cousin Smolensk, Ochakov sports standard armor for a Tier VIII light cruiser. The 25 mm bow, stern, and side armor will only bounce armor piercing shells 356 mm or smaller. The 27 mm deck will resist the 381 mm AP shells common in Ochakov’s matchmaking spread, but captains should largely avoid testing the armor against battleship-caliber AP shells. The 50 mm citadel roof and 70 mm belt armor may occasionally bounce a stray AP shell but otherwise should not be counted upon for protection. The citadel itself sits above the water line and extends from the foremost to the rearmost turret, making it an easy target to score critical hits. Due to her light armor, Ochakov is also vulnerable to damage from high explosive and semi-armor piercing salvos.
In addition to the fragile armor scheme, Ochakov has one of the lowest health pools of her tier at only 30,200 hitpoints, with no Repair Party to supplement this during battle. Ochakov captains must be careful in how they expose themselves as the ship won’t forgive any errors in judgment.
Armament
Ochakov carries a main battery of eight 152 mm guns housed in four twin turrets. Like Smolensk, the turrets are divided equally fore and aft into superfiring pairs. When kiting, captains should be wary of the 30° rear firing angles for the front turrets, making it easy to overexpose her side. Ochakov’s HE ammunition will be familiar to anyone who has played Chapayev, featuring high shell velocity, middling damage, and decent fire chance for Tier VIII. Her AP shells, also widely used among the Russian light cruisers, are notable for their flat shell arcs and above average penetration for the caliber, although beyond 10 km captains should only expect to citadel thinly armored cruisers.
The chief weakness of Ochakov’s main battery is the low firing range of 15.6 km, unlike the tech tree Russian light cruisers that can comfortably target ships beyond 17 km. In practice, Ochakov’s short range means getting spotted firing will likely lead to accurate return fire that her fragile hull will struggle to sustain. Resourceful captains should look to avoid trading damage directly in favor of firing from cover or at targets that cannot shoot back.
Despite a relatively swift main battery reload time of 6.1 seconds, Ochakov’s low barrel count means that her damage per minute is only mediocre for a light cruiser. The low shell density per salvo is particularly noticeable when radaring destroyers, as captains generally only have a very small window to hit the target before it turns away to safety. Ochakov’s main battery is serviceable in most aspects, however should not be relied upon as the sole source of advantage in battle.
In addition to her main battery, Ochakov also carries two quintuple torpedo launchers, one per side, with an 8 km range, 15,100 damage per torpedo, and 56 knot speed. This allows captains to launch at pursuers roughly 10 km away, safe in the knowledge that their adversaries will close into torpedo range before they expire. The excellent 1.1 km detection gives little reaction time before they hit their target. In brawling situations, the combined 75,000 torpedo alpha per side with good launch angles makes Ochakov an unappetizing foe if she cannot be subdued quickly. In such situations, captains should be mindful that there is no secondary battery to start fortuitous fires – all armaments are player controlled.
Concealment and Maneuverability
In compensation for her exceptional fragility, Ochakov is one of the stealthiest and speediest cruisers at her tier. With Concealment System Modification 1 and Concealment Expert she has a surface detection of 9.1 km, which comfortably outspots most cruisers in her matchmaking bracket. Combined with her 10 km Surveillance Radar, captains can use this 9.1 km detection range to ‘trap’ destroyers in her radar bubble – triggering her radar when detected to illuminate an unsuspecting opponent – allowing for significant damage to be done. Unlike other Russian 152 mm guns that bloom considerably in smoke, Ochakov only suffers a 5.4 km smoke-fire penalty, making her a comfortable companion to smokescreen-laying allies.
Ochakov’s 35 knot base speed is also among the best in her tier, only meaningfully exceeded by Amalfi, Cataluña, and speed-boosted French cruisers. With the excellent surface detection, this frequently allows captains to reposition for maximum tactical impact, forcing the enemy to respect the Russian cruiser even if she isn’t firing her guns. However, her 750 m turning circle and 8.1 second rudder shift of may not feel as nimble as Ochakov’s diminutive hull would suggest.
Anti-Aircraft suite and Anti-Submarine Warfare
Counterintuitively for a ship with a strong resemblance to Smolensk, Ochakov is not especially comfortable facing aerial threats. This is primarily due to the weak long range aura, only producing 59.50 dps at 5.8 km with 3 flak. To make up for this, the mid range aura is a beefy 269.5 dps at 4 km, and she has Defensive AA Fire in a separate consumable slot. Thus Ochakov is able to defend herself against Tier VI or VIII carriers, but should expect Tier X planes to penetrate her anti-air defenses handily.
Ochakov is at a significant disadvantage against submarines due to having ship-dropped rather than air-dropped depth charges. While her depth charges do high damage to any opponent unlucky enough to be below, the risks involved in maneuvering such a fragile cruiser into position are prohibitive. In practice, Ochakov must treat submarines as hard-counters to her preferred stealth-based play style, using her teammates, Surveillance Radar, and Hydroacoustic Search to mitigate the threat as much as possible.
Battle Performance
Ochakov excels at medium ranges as a stealthy radar support cruiser. Unlike the Russian tech tree light cruisers, which prefer to lay down high volumes of long range support fire, Ochakov prefers to skulk closer to the front lines to support her allied destroyers with radar. However, captains must carefully consider their positioning at all times, as the ship has little margin for error when it comes to survivability. Once mastered, Ochakov offers a flavor of Russian light cruiser gameplay not found on any other ship, where smart use of concealment, speed, weaponry, and consumables can solve a variety of tactical problems.Pros:
- High shell velocity
- Quintuple 8 km torpedoes
- High top speed of 35 knots
- Excellent surface concealment as low as 9.1 km
- Has access to a 10 km Surveillance Radar consumable
Cons:
- Anemic hitpoint pool and fragile armor.
- Short main battery firing range.
- Low barrel count and mediocre damage per minute.
- Vulnerable to submarines due to deck-dropped depth charges.
- Weak long-range anti-aircraft damage and flak.
