?|bio=x+|bio=Louis-Hippolyte Violette (1869-1950) was a Vice Admiral of the French Navy (1923). A brilliant mathematician and an expert in optics, Violette, while still a lieutenant, took part in the creation of the first submarine periscope usable in a combat situation. He successfully managed to apply his talent and knowledge to torpedo art and artillery. Apart from his work on improving the optics of observation and aiming means, Violette contributed to the implementation of electricity on the ships on which he served, increasing their fire efficiency significantly, whether that be battleships or cruisers.

 +During World War I, Louis-Hippolyte Violette took part in combat actions in the Mediterranean. Commanding a task force of escort ships, he fought vigorously against enemy submarines. At the end of the war, Violette was already one of the key figures in the Anti-Submarine Directorate of the Naval Ministry. Later on, he commanded a division of dreadnought battleships for several years, before becoming the head of the Mediterranean squadron, holding a flag on the battleship Bretagne. The position of the Chief of Staff of the French Navy, which he held from 1928 to 1931, was fully deserved. Louis-Hippolyte Violette always kept working on the modernization of the fleet, introducing new technical means and improving the methods of maneuvering and firing.
