Commander Bio:

André Lemonnier (1896-1963) was an Admiral of the French Navy (1952). He began his service during the years of World War I, taking part in the Dardanelles Campaign and military operations on the Macedonian Front. He later served on destroyers and submarines, brilliantly graduating from the War College. The sharp intelligence and outstanding expertise of this active young officer were much appreciated by those in command-Lemonnier took part in various international conferences as an expert and acted as a marine advisor to the Senate. During the early stages of World War II, André Lemonnier commanded artillery units during the defense of the French north coast. After France was defeated, he defended Dakar, performing his duties as a commander of a light cruiser. The admiral's hour of triumph came in July 1943, when he was appointed as Chief of Staff of the French Navy. Lemonnier, with his remarkable energy, strong character, pragmatism, and self-consistency, was a perfect fit for that role. The Navy soon restored its combat capabilities and was able to join the fight against the Axis powers. The admiral's energetic endeavors played a key role during the Liberation of Corsica in the autumn of 1943. In 1944, he took an active part in the preparations for the landings in Normandy and Provence. He also made a tremendous contribution to the renewal of the French Navy in the post-war period.
