The FV4004 Conway is a British tier 9 tank destroyer.

The tank destroyer prototype was created on the basis of the Centurion medium tank. Developed for use in combat against heavy tanks of that period, including the IS-3.

The FV4004 Conway is a tier 9 tank destroyer in turreted British TD line. It is noticeably less agile than its predecessor, still lacks protection like its predecessor. However, it offers two good gun choices, which makes up for it.

As of 1.18.1.1, it has two gun choices; The 120mm gun which is also the Tortoise's top gun, which offers very good DPM, and the 5.5 inch gun, which trades gun arc and RoF for massive alpha damage.

Despite seemingly impressive firepower on paper, the Conway is a difficult tank to play. Terrible gun stabilization, camouflage values, a large profile, low mobility and poor protection make this vehicle an easy target for the enemy if it's spotted.

The FV4004 Conway leads to the FV4005 Stage II.

Player Opinion

Pros and Cons

Pros:

- Friendly stock grind, with its stock gun being the same gun as the Tortoise's top gun.

- The 120mm is very accurate with a fast aiming time.

- Short reload with the 120mm cannon at 7,48 seconds and okay penetration makes it possible to deal a ton of damage in a short time.

- 9th highest DPM in the game with its 120mm cannon at 3,076 DPM, which can go up to 3,791 DPM with the suggested equipment and a crew with BoA.


Cons:

- Tied with Strv 103 for The lowest hitpoint pool of tier 9 TDs, although one should get used to this as the FV4005 has the lowest of tier 10 TDs.

- Poor gun elevation at only 10 degrees.

- Limited top speed and poor hull and turret traverse speeds. Turret cannot fully rotate with the 5.5-in gun.

- Generally poor armor and a large target due to its turret

- Low ammo capacity on both guns (Only 35 shells with the 120mm and 30 with the 5.5-in gun)

- Bad camouflage values for a tank destroyer, even with a crew with camo skills and equipment

- Horrible gun stabilization, negates the (on paper) good aiming time


Performance

The Conway can be a difficult tank destroyer to perform well in, due to its bad speed with a massive turret with weak armor (Only 132mm at the front), it's recommended to stay in the back and snipe, but with its poor camouflage ratings you should make sure that you're safe to retreat back into cover if you decide to shoot an enemy thats within your view range, because you're almost guaranteed to be spotted. And remember to keep an eye on your ammo count if you use the 120mm, with the poor ammo capacity and fast reload you can run out of ammo pretty quick.


Early Research

You don't need to research a turret and start with a great gun, making it an easier grind that is similar to the Ru 251. If you already researched through the British mediums or heavies, then you will already have the top engine and radio.

Historical Info

FV 4004 Self-propelled gun, 120 mm, L1 gun, Mk 3" prototype based on a Centurion 3 hull with a larger calibre 120 mm L1 gun in a turret made from rolled plate. To be an interim design until Conqueror tank entered service. One built before the project was cancelled in 1951.

Historical Accuracy Errata

The following are consensus errors or inconsistencies which have been identified with the configuration of the vehicle in question and conflict with information available on the public record. The causes for these divergences in the game are normally not disclosed and may be rooted in game balance.

The B.L. 5.5 inch gun was only fitted to the FV3805 and a turretless Crusader. Its configuration on the Conway is fake.
  • In reality it had -5° of gun depression instead of -10°
  • Historical HESH round with 152 mm penetration for the L1 120 mm gun is missing.
  • The armor-piercing shell of the L1 120 mm gun is considerably weaker than in reality, with only 259 mm of penetration compared to the historical 361.
