The 17-pdr gun which was devastating on the Archer and still very good on the Achilles is painfully sub-par on the Challenger. With 171 penetration, you'll find standard rounds unable to penetrate most tier VIII and IX tanks frontally. It's large silhouette and poor camouflage values make this tank difficult to conceal (even with camo-oriented setup, most enemies will spot you from about 350m), and the thin armour won't block many shots. | The 17-pdr gun which was devastating on the Archer and still very good on the Achilles is painfully sub-par on the Challenger. The Challenger is a British tier 7 tank destroyer.
Created in 1942 based on the extended chassis of the Cromwell. One definite advantage of the new vehicle was its 17-pounder gun, which was the most powerful British gun at that time. This allowed the tank destroyer to effectively hit the enemy at distances up to 1,000 meters. However, the vehicle had a large silhouette and the chassis was overloaded. A total of about 200 vehicles were built.
The Challenger leads to the Charioteer.

Player Opinion
Pros and Cons
Pros:
- Very fast speed and surprisingly good traverse (for a TD), can let it play a flanking role or fall back when in danger
- Gun depression is'nt too shabby, especially compared to the AT 7
- Wonderful Gun handling and accuracy lets even amateurs nail shots frequently ( if they pen is another question )
- Very fast RoF compensates it's horrible Alpha damage
- Has a turret and pivots unlike most at tier TD's
Cons:
- Not particularly good penetration on gun, 171 mm of pen. Is ok at its tier, but will struggle with higher tier engagements
- Large size and thin armor makes you easy pickings for enemy tanks ( especially arty )
- While not horrible for a TD, the hull and turret travers could be better
- Easily the 2nd worst tier VII TD (Still better than Sturer Emil); The grind to the Charioteer will be long and painful
- 2nd turret has a mere 40mm of frontal armor ( 200 mm on the back, This is only useful very occasionally)
Performance
The 17-pdr gun which was devastating on the Archer and still very good on the Achilles is painfully sub-par on the Challenger. With 171 penetration, you'll find standard rounds unable to penetrate most tier VIII and IX tanks frontally. It's large silhouette and poor camouflage values make this tank difficult to conceal (even with camo-oriented setup, most enemies will spot you from about 350m), and the thin armour won't block many shots.
The role of this tank is long-range sniping. Its decent mobility allows to take advantageous positions early and quickly change positions, should such need arise. Avoid close-range fighting - poor armour, slow traverse and low accuracy while moving make you an easy prey for most light and medium tanks you encounter. After the Buff in update 9.15, it is a very effective flanking tank, especially with the top gun and turret and on maps such as malinovka, where the good maneuverability and fast-firing gun will allow you to harass enemy tanks from behind rather effectively.
An interesting thing to note is that the stock turret of the Challenger is very similar to the turret on the TOG II*. This is not coincidental; during development, the TOG II* was fitted with a variety of turrets, the final configuration seen today in the Bovington Tank Museum and in the game used the Challenger's turret.

The Challenger in this game is an amalgamation of the Challenger cruiser tank and the Avenger tank destroyer. The Avenger utilised a new hull based on the Comet cruiser tank; the turret was never fitted to a Challenger.
