Specifically, the mismatch in crew values caused by commander's 10% crew skill bonus. Outside of a crew of 1 commander only, 100% crew is a fiction. The client values, given for 100% crew, will normally be taken into battle with 110% crew skill members aside from specific functions, causing their actual performance to deviate from the expected client value. These differences are taken into account in tooltip boxes.

The Somua SM is a French tier 8 premium heavy tank.

A French heavy tank, presented as an alternative for the AMX 50 at a design competition. Development started in 1946; however, the prototype was not ready until October 1951. German tank-building technologies were applied in the development of the vehicle: it was equipped with a 100-mm gun with a magazine-system autoloader installed in an oscillating turret. The tank underwent trials from January through July 1953, during which it did not show any promising results. Consequently, the project was discontinued in favor of the AMX 50.

Player Opinion

Pros and Cons

Pros:

- High burst damage potential, has the fastest between-shell reloading of all French 100mm guns.

- High DPM, short full clip reload for its clip size, comparable to tier 9 autoloaders

- Decent armor by French standards: similar UFP and hull side to the Tiger II

- Outstanding gun depression at -10°

- High penetration on default munition

- Short aim time and above average dispersion penalty, first class if not the best gun handling out of all tier 8 autoloaders

- Crew setup fits the autoloader heavy line perfectly, ideal crew trainer

Cons:

- Worst accuracy of all high tier French vehicles except SPGs, many shots would go wild especially when not fully aimed

- Worst mobility of all high tier French autoloaders, lacking in both top speed and power to weight ratio

- A bit cheesy turret armor, only the "jaws" are of decent thickness

- 1 less round in the clip than the AMX 50 100, higher risk of failing to one-clip opponents

- Playstyle differs from other French autoloaders greatly, requiring much experince to handle well

Performance

The Somua SM works well as a frontline supporter-brawler. Judging by the traditions of French autoloaders, its burst damage may not be that surprising, neither has it the necessary mobility to evade retaliate easily. Yet American autoloader commanders will find this vehicle much accustomed: handy armor, quick reload and adaptive to terrains. The only significant difference is that boxy, Germanic appearance than large cast pieces. Tactics-wise, its slow pace suits those heavy brethren perfectly. Play like an T57 Heavy Tank: finish off the damaged or devastate the fresh ones in no time, then retreat into cover. Fear not when the situations call for your spearheading, for you do have some armor to boot. Bullying the meds is also an option, just be well-aware that the Somua can't relocate as one wishes easily, and probably won't survive any wolf-pack assault with depleted drum and little support.
