This means that supercruisers, heavy cruisers with high HE penetration (e.g. Hindenberg or Henry IV with IFHE), battleships shooting HE, and American Tiny Tim rockets and HE bombs can penetrate the deck and easily rack up damage. Another unique characteristic of the hull is the rather impressive secondary battery. Comprised entirely of 105mm DP guns with Massachusetts-level accuracy and range, they serve as an excellent deterrent against destroyers and other light vessels that make attempts to assault Richthofen at close range.

Next, her aircraft. Richthofen's attack aircraft are unique, as they use armor piercing rockets instead of the high explosive rockets that are found on other carriers at this tier. This makes the Red Baron less effective against destroyers, since the rockets will just over-penetrate or bounce, but they have undeniably excellent performance against broadsiding cruisers and the upper works of the more thinly armored battleships that Richthofen will see. Her show-stealers, however are her dive bombers. Unlike other dive bombers, these start from high altitude and dive straight down towards their target, which, while it makes charging through flak a challenge, allows for a precision drop on larger targets such as supercruisers. Speaking of which, Richthofen's bombers use AP bombs that boast incredible alpha damage and high penetration — enough to surpass even the pre-AP bomb adjusted Hakuryu by some 900 points of damage, should all three bombs dropped hit the citadel of the target. (If they hit the target, that is; the aiming reticle is an ellipsoid, unlike that of Graf Zeppelin and Erich Loewenhardt, which means that bombs can just as easily miss the target as they can hit it.) Finally, we come to the torpedo bombers. These bombers are ridiculously fast, armed with high speed torpedoes that are guaranteed to hit the target with proper lead. Unlike Hakuryu's or Midway's torpedo bombers, these are more of a secondary weapon than a main striking arm, more useful for finishing off low health targets or starting floods than actually inflicting large amounts of damage on a singular target, due to the low alpha damage on each fish. One more thing to note about these aircraft is that they have rather low HP pools compared to the aircraft of other carriers at this tier, yet they are capable of speeds that would shame other carriers, capable of a ridiculous 230 knots with the W key mashed into the board (and with the proper upgrades and commander skills, of course ). Next, her aircraft. Player Opinion

Performance

Capping off the German carrier line, Manfred von Richthofen, named for the famous WWI pilot known as the Red Baron, is the epitome of German carrier design, ironically having never been conceived much less built at the time it was supposed in-game to be designed and laid down.

Let's start with the hull first. Unlike other purpose built aircraft carriers, such as Midway, Richthofen is basically an airfield laid down on top off an H-class battleship hull. This, of course, gives her solid durability against both HE and AP shell fire, thanks to a turtleback armor scheme that is unique among her type, although her flight deck is just 50mm thick, compared to the other carriers at this tier that possess decks that easily exceed 70 or 80mm in thickness.

Overall, Richthofen is a bit polarized for a Tier X carrier, as it specializes more towards dealing with cruiser and battleship-killing duties (though it is amusing to snipe carriers with the AP rockets) — something difficult to pull off with it's relatively low plane HP pool. However, all of her positive traits make Richthofen a worthy addition to Tier X and a powerful carrier that is truly worthy of her name.

Pros:

 • Powerful and long-ranged armament of secondary cannons, effective against destroyers.
 • Thick and sharply angled armor that will deflect or shatter most of the same-tier shells.
 • Decent maneuverability that allows coming closer to the frontline and even capture points when needed.
 • Accurate and fast torpedoes that can reliably hit all but the most nimble of targets.
 • Dive bombers have access to Repair Party.
 • AP rockets, when angled properly, will deliver up to a dozen of citadel penetrations on a cruiser per run.
 • Bombs and rockets, if they hit the citadel (which is more likely than not), deal tremendous damage that is only partially recoverable with Repair Party.
 • Aircraft has increased speed and engine boost, making it more effective in scouting and spotting than most other planes of the same tier.
 • AP Rockets are surprisingly powerful against other carriers, allowing efficient cannibalizing if needed.

Cons:

 • All planes are heavily specialized and have mutually exclusive roles, with actual damage numbers varying wildly depending on a number of variables.
 • High-altitude bombers must fly really close to the target in order to hit, being exposed to enemy AA the whole route. Even with Repair active, planes will fall quickly to tier X AA fire.
 • Bombers and attack planes are very demanding to the angle of the target, chances to hit the citadel being reduced to near-negligible if the angle is not straight 0 or 90 degrees respectively.
 • AP rockets are of limited use against both destroyers and battleships: while they can deal sufficient damage to superstructures and may do some normal penetration hits on destroyers, they are incomparable to HE rockets of other tier X carriers.
 • Torpedoes have very low damage and chance to flood, making them nearly powerless against classes other than destroyers and light cruisers.
 • Dive bomb reticle is rather wide and bombs drop with a significant delay, making them effective mostly against battleships and some heavy/superheavy cruisers.
 • No reliable ways to ignite fires or break modules of the enemy ships.
 • Plane durability is lower than that of other carriers.

Research

Like other Tier 10 aircraft carriers, Manfred von Richthofen does not come elite on purchase.

 • Attack Aircraft: Upgrade to Me155G for slightly higher plane speed and health.
 • Torpedo Bombers: Upgrade to Ta 152C-1/R14 for higher plane speed and slightly more health.
 • Dive Bombers: Upgrade to Ta 152C-1/R14 for higher plane speed, slightly more health, and a big damage boost (7'800->8'800).
Players are encouraged to prioritize researching dive bombers first for the damage boost. Torpedo bombers should come second as they gain more speed than attack aircraft, and are used against all kind of targets, whereas attack aircraft are only used against cruisers. Attack aircraft should be researched last.

Optimal Configuration

Upgrades

The recommended upgrades for Manfred von Richthofen are as follows:

Upgrade Slot 5 offers players A choice between Flight Control Modification 1 and Squadron Consumbales Modification 1, which adds 50% to the length of all consumables. Players wishing to have more responsive fighters and longer heals can take this upgrade in in combination with repair specialist to get 8.2 second heals on their Dive and Torpedo Bombers . As for fighters, with Enhanced reactions, search and destroy and patrol group leader you can extend the fighter duration to more then 1.5 minutes post 0.10.4.
