Admiral Schröder — German special premium Tier IX cruiser.
Drawing from the experience gained in World War I, the concept of a large surface raider emerged in Germany in the late 1920s. The projects considered the intention of Great Britain to impose restrictions on battleship armament to a maximum caliber of 305 mm during upcoming naval conferences. Under the proposed designs, the standard displacement varied between 17,500 and 25,000 tons, while the armament consisted of four turrets housing eight 305 mm guns, accompanied by a strong secondary battery of 150 mm guns. The armor was rather light for the ship to be classified as a battleship, as was her anti-torpedo protection.
Admiral Schröder was first released for completing all 30 Stages of the Hamburg Dockyard on 07 December 2022.

Tier IX Admiral Schröder is a fast, stealthy, well-armored, and heavily-armed large cruiser project, reminiscent of the O-class sisters IX Ägir and IX Siegfried. This ship excels at medium- to close-range engagements.
Main battery
Admiral Schröder’s main battery is a mixed bag. Compared with Ägir - a ship that shares the same caliber guns - Admiral Schröder has worse armor piercing (AP) penetration, lower shell velocity (and floatier shells), and eight guns instead of nine. Admiral Schröder mounts all of her guns in four twin turrets (two fore and two aft), meaning she has to show some broadside to fire more than half of her guns. Fortunately, she has good firing angles, allowing her to remain angled while keeping most of her guns on target. However, Admiral Schröder’s rearmost turret can rotate a full 360-degrees - similar to the German battlecruisers - allowing her to switch targets from one side of the ship to the other without having to wait for both rear turrets to rotate all the way around. The slower velocity of her shells does have a silver lining: it allows her to more reliably penetrate (and potentially citadel) lightly armored targets that other large cruisers would otherwise overpenetrate and deal minimal damage to. Additionally, she has a comparatively fast reload on her main guns, sitting at a mere 18 seconds.
However, it’s not just her main battery that makes Admiral Schröder stand out among cruisers: she boasts the highest number of secondary guns mounted on any cruiser at any tier. She is bristling in 128mm and 150mm secondaries with a high rate-of-fire and standard German quarter pen. This allows her secondaries to penetrate the 32mm plating commonly found on high-tier battleships without needing to take the IFHE skill. They also have the increased secondary range typical of German ships - 8km base. The reload times of her secondary guns are improved over other ships, meaning she has better theoretical secondary battery damage-per-minute than ships like X Preussen. Unfortunately, these secondaries only have standard German secondary dispersion characteristics, which makes them extremely inaccurate, especially at long range. Therefore, her effective secondary damage-per-minute is very poor, and thus unreliable as a means of dealing damage. Nevertheless, it is a tool to help counter opponents that get too close.
Survivability
For a cruiser, Admiral Schröder has an excellent armor scheme. It is almost identical to the armor schemes of IX Ägir and IX Siegfried (the O-class sisters), with 27mm bow and stern plating, 30mm deck plating, and a 90mm upper belt that stretches from the 190mm main belt to the top deck. Captains familiar with the O-class sisters will feel comfortable with Admiral Schröder’s armor scheme, utilizing proper angling and the 90mm upper belt to bounce/shatter enemy shells. Her citadel is protected by a steeply-angled turtleback, although the sloped sides of the turtleback are only 28mm thick (unlike the 80mm plating found on Ägir and Siegfried), and thus can be overmatched by 406mm or larger armor-piercing shells. The citadel also sits above the waterline and can be penetrated easily if she exposes her broadside. Lastly, it should be noted that she features a low weather deck on her stern, which creates a “shell trap” that can lead to full penetration damage when sailing away from enemy ships. Admiral Schröder is subject to the 60-second fires that are characteristic of most large cruisers and takes twice as much damage due to floods compared to most cruisers.
Maneuverability
Admiral Schröder has a base top speed of 32.5 knots - relatively slow for a high-tier cruiser. Her top speed can be temporarily increased through the use of her enhanced Engine Boost consumable. Otherwise, she has poor handling for a cruiser: she has an average turning radius but one of the worst rudder shifts among Tier IX cruisers.
Consumables
Admiral Schröder may mount a variety of consumables that diversify her gameplay. She has access to the standard cruiser Damage Control Party consumable, which must be managed carefully due to her vulnerability to fires and floods. Admiral Schröder has access to the standard German cruiser Hydroacoustic Search consumable, sporting 6km ship detection and 4km torpedo detection ranges. In the third slot, captains have access to a rarity amongst German ships: an Engine Boost consumable that improves her acceleration and increases her top speed by 15% (compared to the standard 8% of other ships). Lastly, Admiral Schröder has a standard version of the Repair Party consumable, which will restore valuable hitpoints (including 10% citadel damage).
Anti-Aircraft Defenses
Admiral Schröder’s anti-aircraft battery is unremarkably average for its tier. The long-range aura deals slightly above-average damage out to a range of 6km, while the medium-ranged aura deals mediocre damage within a 4km radius. The short-range aura is among the worst at Tier IX.
Battle Performance
Pros:
- Excellent survivability and armor for a cruiser
- Numerous secondary battery guns
- Good firing angles
- Decent base top speed for her size, plus an Engine Boost consumable
- Good concealment for a large cruiser
Cons:
- Poor anti-aircraft firepower
- Vulnerable citadel
- 60 second (battleship-length) fire duration
- Mediocre maneuverability
- No torpedo armament for close-ranged brawls
- Secondary battery is highly inaccurate
