A successful light aircraft carrier based on the Cleveland-class cruiser. The ship was well-armored, had a high speed and carried numerous AA artillery. Small displacement limited the aircraft carrier's hangar capacity.

Independence was removed from the game with Update 0.8.0 - the CV Rework.

Player Opinion

Performance

Independence is the first U.S. carrier in the game that is not based on a transport hull; rather, she is built on a Cleveland hull. As a light carrier she serves as a stepping-stone between the previous escort carriers and the full fleet carriers of the later tiers.

The most important new feature introduced at this tier is the ability to strafe and manually drop ordinance using the Alt key. Skilled use of these features will greatly enhance the effectiveness of all planes.

  • Stock (1-1-1): The Independence has one Fighter and one Dive Bomber upgrade available.
The Cleveland hull is much better than her predecessors. Most importantly, she has a larger hangar at 37 planes when upgraded; this is still small, however, and captains must still husband their planes carefully especially when faced with higher-tier AA. She also inherits a speed of 31.5 knots (a breath of fresh air after the incredibly slow speeds of Bogue and Langley), strong AA, and at least a modicum of armor. Independence loses her two 127 mm secondaries with Hull (B), leaving her with no anti-ship weapons of any kind or long-range AA, in exchange for better mid-range AA. However, this is more than a fair trade for the larger hangar size. One other oddity is that her air detection range is longer than her surface detection range.

Pros:

  • Carries many good characteristics from Cleveland: speed (almost twice as fast as Bogue!) AA power, armor, and turning circle radius.
  • Very good fighters for her tier---better than Ryujo in every way (speed, damage, ammunition load, and durability)---and they come in larger squadrons to boot!

Cons:

  • Hangar size is improved but still very limited at 37, 11 less than her counterpart.
  • Only three squadrons limits map presence.
  • No secondary armament on Hull (B), making her planes her only defense.
  • Somewhat slow rudder shift.

Research

Players should research Hull (B) since the extra planes and AA is needed if you want to lose fighters. Most carrier players will take the bait of your planes and fly right into your AA, getting easy plane kills.

Camouflage

Type 1, 2, or 5 camouflage can be equipped for credits; Types 1 or 5 are recommended at a minimum to reduce detectability range.

Players who wish to spend doubloons can equip Independence with Type 16 camouflage that lowers her detection radius, reduces the accuracy of incoming shells, and increases the amount of experience she earns.

Signals

As a carrier, Independence can only mount at most four signals at a time and has no risk of detonating. Players should mount Equal Speed Charlie London (for faster XP grinding / increased XP gain per battle), Zulu Hotel (when coupled with Equal Speed Charlie London greatly helps increase commander (re)training), November Echo Setteseven (for better bomber self-defense against fighters and increased AA DPS), and Juliet Whiskey Unaone (to have a better chance at causing flooding and dealing damage via flooding). Players can also choose to equip the Dragon Flag for faster commander (re)training.
