The Lago M38 is a Swedish tier 3 premium light tank.
After canceling production on the Strv m/31, the Swedish company AB Landsverk started developing a new tank for export. Based on designs for the promising L-60 project, the vehicle's dimensions were increased and its weight grew to 15 tons. The first plans for the vehicle appeared in 1936, and featured both the Austrian Böhler M35 47 mm anti-tank gun and the Schwarzlose M. 07/12 machine gun. The frontal armor was around 34 mm thick. Initially, the vehicle was designated as LAGO and intended for the Austrian army. Later, there were plans for it to be sent to Hungary with the same armament. However, none of these deals went through. The vehicle had similar characteristics to those of the German Pz.Kpfw. III and it had export potential, but by 1940, the original designs had undergone significant changes. A year later, the Swedish military showed interest in the vehicle.
The Lago M38 is a mixed bag, a light that performs more like a medium. Its main gun is adequate, concealment is okay, protection is very good, and mobility is decent.

Player Opinion
Pros and Cons
Pros:
- Very good gun depression with good aim time
- Rugged with decent armor, can take quite a few hits
- Excellent reverse speed
- A good credit maker and crew trainer (60% bonus to both)
Cons:
- Below-average alpha, DPM, and shell velocity
- Not a true light tank, concealment goes down significantly when moving
- Lackluster specific engine power
Performance
The Lago M38 suffers from a mediocre main gun for its tier. Its aim time is good, accuracy is average, and it has a solid gun depression of 10 degrees. Penetration is just adequate for hurting enemy Valentines, but DPM, alpha, and shell velocities are all below average. It's a decent-enough gun but certainly nothing spectacular.
Concealment is another area where the M38 doesn't shine. It has fair concealment but most other Tier III lights are better, and the M38 doesn't keep its full concealment while in motion, hurting its ability to flank, scout, and reposition when needed without getting noticed and fired on.
However the M38 is a rugged AFV, tied for second with the Pz. II J for health; only the Pz. T 15 has more. Frontal hull armor is good, with below average thickness but it's sloped rather well. The turret has the same armor thickness but with no sloping to speak of, but it's a rather small target; combined with the M38's good gun depression makes hull-down tactics viable. Overall the armor stops about 100 damage in an average battle, enough to increase effective hit points by about 20%, which is very good.
Mobility is a mix bag: Below-average forward speed but enough to not feel like you're going too slow, but the M38 can reverse quite fast. Specific engine power is poor for a light, climbing hills takes longer than average.
Unfortunately the tank's crew layout -- Commander (Radio Operator), Gunner, Driver, Loader -- doesn't match any of the other Swedish lights, but commanders, gunners, and drivers from the Strv m/38 and m/40L will work in a pinch.
Given its mediocrity the Lago M38 turns out to be a surprisingly excellent light tank, if not superb. Optimal tactics are to keep one's distance from the enemy -- medium range is about right given its gun's average dispersion -- and hull-down tactics should be employed whenever possible. The M38 is more of a medium than a light and should be played as such; as a rule allowing the other lights on your team to get the spotting done.
Overall it's a successful and fun tank to play, well worth a try if you have one.
Early Research
The Lago M38 is a premium tank so there's nothing to research, be sure to turn on Accelerate Crew Training right away.
Suggested Equipment
Documented Tank and Crew Builds
The most viable equipment for the M38 is Binocular Telescope, Improved Ventilation (mostly for better gun dispersion), Improved Hardening (+45 health is very tempting), and Low-Noise Exhaust; pick two.
