North Carolina CLR — American special premium Tier VIII battleship.
The U.S. Navy initially developed a battleship featuring 356 mm guns under contract, but she later had her caliber changed to 406 mm due to Japan's refusal to accept the restrictions. During World War II, USS North Carolina escorted convoys and participated in the Guadalcanal campaign, the Battle of the Eastern Solomons, the Gilbert and Marshall Islands campaign, the Mariana Islands campaign, the Battle of the Philippine Sea, the landings in the Philippines, and the landings in Okinawa. During the course of the war, the ship was awarded 12 battle stars.
North Carolina CLR was first released for sale on 16 June 2023.

Performance
Armament
North Carolina CLR has access to nine accurate 406 mm guns. These guns have an impressive firing range of 23.26 km, which can be further increased with her spotting aircraft and the Artillery Plotting Room Modification 1 upgrade. Her guns can overmatch 27 mm of plating that is commonly found on cruisers at her tier. This allows North Carolina CLR to deal consistent damage to most cruisers she faces. However, she may struggle to damage higher tier battleships.
North Carolina CLR’s high accuracy allows her to effectively punish enemy ships at most ranges. However, her AP shells are floaty and require greater lead at range. She is the first American battleship to gain access to "Super-heavy AP shells", which trade poor velocity and short range performance for increased penetration at longer ranges.
North Carolina CLR has access to both AP (armor piercing) and HE (high explosive) shells. The AP shells deal 13,100 maximum damage while the HE shells deal 5,700 maximum damage with a 39% fire chance. North Carolina CLR should mainly fire AP, only switching to HE for enemy destroyers and angled higher tier battleships. The main guns reload in 30 seconds, which can only be reduced by the use of the Close Quarters Combat and Adrenaline Rush captain skills. Compared to her peers at Tier VIII, North Carolina CLR has the main battery range and accuracy advantage with 2.05 sigma (meaning her shells are more likely to land where the player aims). North Carolina CLR packs quite a punch for a Tier VIII battleship, being able to punish the enemy better compared to her counterparts.
North Carolina CLR has slow turrets for her tier, taking 45 seconds to traverse 180 degrees. Battlefield knowledge and positioning will be important to make the best use out of her main battery.
Secondary Battery
North Carolina CLR’s secondary battery consists of 10 twin-mounted 127 mm dual-purpose guns, with 5 mounts per side. They lack any improved dispersion, which makes them unreliable at hitting targets, and have a short 6.6 km range, low 5% fire chance, and slow 6-second reload for their caliber. Captains should avoid investing commander points and modules into North Carolina CLR’s secondary battery and focus on her survivability and main guns. If captains decide to invest into her secondary battery, they can have a max range of 10 km, a reload time of 5.7 seconds, and a 7% fire chance.
Survivability
North Carolina CLR has slightly improved deck armor (38 mm) compared to the standard 32 mm plating at Tier VIII, allowing her to survive longer against cruiser-caliber HE. She is otherwise covered in the standard 32 mm battleship plating and has a rather large superstructure, so captains should position carefully to help avoid heavy fire.
While North Carolina CLR has enhanced deck plating, the rest of her armor is average. She will take heavy damage from large-caliber HE and AP shells while broadside. Her citadel is vulnerable while giving broadside, and the majority of battleships and even some cruisers can punish North Carolina CLR if she’s broadside. This is somewhat mitigated by her enhanced heal. While not as strong as British battleships Lion and Conqueror, it allows her to recover more health compared to her peers. She has four charges stock or five with the Emergency Repair Expert captain skill. She has an average healthpool for her tier (66,000) and subpar torpedo protection (19%). North Carolina CLR has great concealment for her class at 15.2 km base, which can be reduced to 12.3 km with the Concealment System Modification 1 upgrade and Concealment Expert captain skill.
Maneuverability
North Carolina CLR is one of the slower battleships for her tier, doing 27.5 knots with her upgraded engine. Her rudder shift time is good for a Tier VIII battleship at 15.2 seconds which can be reduced to 12.2 with the use of Steering Gears Modification 1 . She has a tight turning radius for a battleship of her size, allowing her to evade incoming fire and torpedoes.
Anti-Aircraft
North Carolina CLR has respectable anti-air capabilities for a Tier VIII battleship. She has a 5.8 km range and produces eight flak explosions. Her long range DPS is high for a Tier VIII battleship at 172, not nearly as high as Flandre but still respectable. Her short- and medium-range defenses are more powerful compared to her peers, at 308 and 389 DPS respectively.
North Carolina CLR doesn’t have access to any consumables such as Defensive AA Fire to enhance her anti-air capabilities. If captains choose to build into her anti-air, they can increase the flak count to nine, the long range to 188 DPS, medium range to 427 and short range to 338. To further deter enemy aircraft attacks, North Carolina CLR has the ability to swap her Spotting Aircraft consumable for a Fighter.
Her AA defenses can assist allies under attack by aircraft and will help mitigate some damage from Tier VI aircraft carriers, but it is not powerful enough to stop strikes from Tier VIII or Tier X aircraft carriers. If North Carolina CLR is facing higher tier aircraft carriers, she should stick with her team to overlap AA cover.
Battle Performance
During battle, captains will instantly notice a major difference compared to the lower tier American battleships. North Carolina CLR has the speed to switch flanks as needed and provide fire support for her team. Captains who have not yet played a ship with speed such as this one should be careful to not overextend, as mispositioning in this ship will lead to a quick return to port. North Carolina CLR should make use of her great concealment and play around 13-14 km from the enemy. This will give her the best chance to punish enemy ships with her accurate guns while also giving enough distance that disengaging is not a problem.Pros:
- 38 mm deck armor
- Excellent main battery range
- Powerful AP shells with high damage
- High sigma
- Good AA defenses
- Significant speed improvement over preceding ships
- Tight turning radius
- Excellent concealment
- Improved Repair Party consumable that heals more damage
Cons:
- Vulnerable citadel
- Poor torpedo protection
- Large superstructure
- Floaty AP shells with long flight times
- Slow turret traverse
- AA defenses can’t stop a strike from high tier carriers
- Many battleships can still outrun her
