Indianapolis — American special premium Tier VII cruiser.
USS Indianapolis, the second cruiser of the Portland class, participated in the New Guinea campaign and the Aleutian Islands campaign during World War II. Later, the ship participated in various landings, including those on Kwajalein, Saipan, and the Mariana and Palau Islands. She also provided cover for raids on Tokyo and took part in the assault landings on Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Tragically, on July 30, 1945, the ship was struck by two torpedoes from a Japanese submarine and sank rapidly. The surviving crew spent several days in the water, even enduring shark attacks. Over the course of World War II, the ship was awarded 10 battle stars.
Indianapolis first went on sale in late May 2016.

Performance
Refer to the in-game Port screens for more useful data.
Indianapolis should hold little to no surprises for players who are accustomed to the gunnery style of the American cruiser line. She's a Portland-class ship; a melding of the Pensacola and Northampton classes with an AB-X (two forward and one aft) turret layout. This arrangement becomes the standard for American cruisers at Tier VIII and above, and her guns pack a nasty punch. Add the fact that she shares most of Pensacola’s quick handling characteristics — her top speed and turning radius are identical — and the result is a cruiser that can snipe at destroyers with ease and hold her own in gunnery duels with cruisers above her tier if played well.
As a treaty cruiser like Pensacola and New Orleans, Indianapolis does not hold up to sustained fire well as her World War II brethren, but is noticeably more durable against other cruisers when her bow is pointed towards them. Her anti-aircraft suite is nearly identical to that of her fellow U.S. Navy cruisers in the regular tech tree, with most of her AA punch coming from her medium-range 40mm Bofors mounts. Indianapolis’ ability to mount the Surveillance Radar consumable gives her an extra leg up on stealthy ships or those concealed by smoke, as not only is she one of a handful of Tier VII ships equipped with radar, but her radar range is equal to that of Tier X's Des Moines (9.9 km).
Played smartly, the utility of Indianapolis’ consumables and main battery guns will significantly contribute towards victory for her team.Pros:
- Impressive guns for a Tier VII cruiser; her AP shell velocity is similar to Myoko and has better normalization values.
- Longest main battery range of all U.S. Navy cruisers.
- Solid AA suite.
- Superb handling; only slightly slower rudder shift time than Pensacola.
- Can equip the mount the Surveillance Radar consumable a full tier before ships in the regular tech tree.
Cons:
- Big target.
- Armor is not durable against other cruisers when broadsides are exposed. As with all cruisers, bow armor will not save her from battleships. Overall she won't last long in prolonged firefights.
- Turrets slightly more prone to incapacitations and then being knocked out.
