?HE bombs are highly effective against destroyers and light cruisers of this tier. Players should start practicing HE drops on destroyers as it becomes the cornerstone for success in high tier games. Torpedo bombers drop two torps per attack, allowing the player to enjoy a higher damage output than before. Since battleships of this tier are slow, players can easily practice their drops against these targets. Fighters are also effective against destroyers, but yet lack to do much damage against battleships. Players are advised to use HE bombs and torpedoes against battleships. +
 +'''Attack Aircraft:'''
 +
+Attack aircraft have a reasonable health pool that allows them to keep attacking enemy ships such as destroyers for a longer amount of time than other carrier's attack aircraft. Rockets are effective against destroyers and do reasonable damage, they can still be effective against cruisers but lack the ability to deal high damage against battleships.
 +
 +'''Torpedo Bombers:'''
 +
+The stock torpedo bombers are extremely slow and almost exactly the same as the ones on ''Langley''. Nevertheless, aerial torpedoes have markedly increased damage from the ''Langley'' (5567 vs 3500), allowing the player to enjoy a higher damage output than before. Once upgraded to the infamously slow TBD Devastators they get an additional attack run with a massive boost in speed and hit points. It is recommended to use these torpedo bombers against battleships because they are slow and players can easily practice their drops against these targets. However though using them against cruisers is not recommended as they will lose a lot of health during the attack run. Torpedoes require a large amount of lead in order to hit.
 +
 +'''Dive Bombers:'''
 +
+HE bombs are highly effective against all ship types due to their high damage and fire chance, allowing her to create permanent fires on a ship if the target ship has used her 'Damage Control Party' during their first bombing run. Note that the bombs have a large aiming circle although it is considered small against battleships and carriers but feels big against cruisers and destroyers, so misses can happen even with perfect aiming. Nevertheless, players should start practicing dropping the HE bombs on destroyers as it becomes the cornerstone for success in battles.
 +
 +'''Tips:'''
 +
+Positioning her is very important when using this ship because she has poor concealment and surprisingly her armor is extremely weak and can take a lot of citadel hits from enemy ships even from destroyer HE shells. ?USS ''Ranger'' (CV-4) was the first ship of the United States Navy to be designed and built from the keel up as an aircraft carrier. Ranger was a relatively small ship, closer in size and displacement to the first US carrier — ''[[Langley]]'' — than later ships. An island superstructure was not included in the original design, but was added after completion. Due to its small displacement, putting a large smokestack like the ''Lexington'' would cause top-heavy and instability. As a solution, experimental smokestacks that could fold sideways were introduced. These stacks would stay upright in normal conditions(taking some of the deck space) and fold horizontally when aircraft had to be launched. Theoretically, it would give enough deck space and clear it of smoke. In reality, the low height the stacks would cover the plane deck with fume whenever the ship was pushing its speed. Also the horizontal placement would only cause more fume to cover up the deck. The small displacement made it impossible to operate the ship in bad weather or carry enough protective devices(AA, anti-torpedo bulge, etc). Learning from these failures, USN were able to design the more successful Yorktown-class carriers such as the ''Enterprise''.<br />+File:F2A_Buffalo_AA.jpg| Brewster F2a Buffalo Attack Aircraft
?Of the eight pre-war US aircraft carriers CV-1 through CV-8, ''Ranger'' was one of only three to survive World War II, the others being ''Enterprise'' and ''Saratoga''. Deemed too slow for use with the Pacific Fleet's carrier task forces, the ship spent most of the war in the Atlantic Ocean.+File:T4M_Bomber.jpg|T4M Torpedo Bomber

+As the first purpose-built carrier, the designers' knowledge of carrier operations was based on wargaming scenarios at the Naval War College. This resulted in numerous design changes during her construction. One such change was the addition of a superstructure: this would later be added on before commissioning into the U.S.Navy on June 4th, 1934. Due to her small displacement, a large smokestack would make her top-heavy and unstable. As a result, Ranger received experimental folding smokestacks, which stayed upright in normal conditions, taking up deck space, and folded horizontally when aircraft were launched. In theory, this would free up deck space and keep it clear of smoke. In reality, the low height of the stacks would cover the flight deck with fumes whenever the ship was sailing at speed.
 +
+Ranger’s Hull design, size, and weight was limited by the Washington Naval Treaty. This is why she was considered unable to match the Japanese threat in the Pacific and assigned to the Atlantic Fleet to face the lesser threat of the German Navy for most of World War II.
 +
+She would undergo numerous retrofits during her lifetime to increase her fighting capability. One such retrofit added torpedo stowage for Torpedo Squadron operations in January of 1942, something originally omitted to cut costs. In December of 1942, she was reconfigured again with strengthened flight deck supports for the newer, larger aircraft, in addition to a considerable boost to her Anti-Aircraft Defense.
 +
 +Service History
 +
+Ranger made 5 transatlantic ferry missions carrying aircraft, troops, and supplies from the US east coast to the African theater during the war. In 1942 she played a significant role in Operation Torch, Launching 496 combat sorties over the course of 3 days. Planes launched from Ranger hit over 200 surface targets and 15 aerial kills only losing 16 planes in total.
 +
+On 25 April 1943, German radio announced "Achtung! Achtung! We are proud to announce that a German submarine has sunk the United States aircraft carrier Ranger in the North Atlantic!" In response Captain Gordon Rowe, Commanding Officer of USS Ranger, stated: “The story that we were sunk was a coward's trick—spreading anxiety and fear among the innocent.… the Ranger, still very much afloat, is doing her job.”
 +
+In October of 1943, She took part in Operation Leader, launching aerial combat attacks on German Shipping lanes in Norwegian waters. Her planes sank 4 ships, and damaged many more, scoring 2 more aerial kills and only losing 3 planes during the operation.
 +
+Of the eight pre-war US aircraft carriers, Ranger was one of only three to survive World War II alongside Enterprise and Saratoga. She was the only pre-war U.S. carrier never to have engaged Japanese forces in battle.

Ranger — American Tier VI aircraft сarrier.

USS Ranger was the first American ship designed and built as an aircraft carrier. The technical specifications called for an aircraft carrier with a smooth deck (no superstructure was planned initially), a speed of 32 knots, and a displacement of no more than 18,000 tons. USS Ranger carried an air group that was only slightly inferior in number to the air groups of her larger predecessors. Ranger continued her service until the end of the war in the Atlantic. She escorted the first Arctic convoys from America to Iceland and was subsequently used as an aircraft transport, facilitating the deployment of army units landing in Africa.

Player Opinion

Performance

Warning. The data presented in the AA Defense sidebar section may be incorrect.

Ranger is the first taste of high-tier carrier play in the American carrier line. She is much faster than the Langley making positioning of the ship much easier. Also, it is the first time where players have access to the Fighter consumable that can provide anti-air support and limited spotting for the team.

Attack Aircraft:

Attack aircraft have a reasonable health pool that allows them to keep attacking enemy ships such as destroyers for a longer amount of time than other carrier's attack aircraft. Rockets are effective against destroyers and do reasonable damage, they can still be effective against cruisers but lack the ability to deal high damage against battleships.

Torpedo Bombers:

The stock torpedo bombers are extremely slow and almost exactly the same as the ones on Langley. Nevertheless, aerial torpedoes have markedly increased damage from the Langley (5567 vs 3500), allowing the player to enjoy a higher damage output than before.

Dive Bombers:

HE bombs are highly effective against all ship types due to their high damage and fire chance, allowing her to create permanent fires on a ship if the target ship has used her 'Damage Control Party' during their first bombing run.

Tips:

Positioning her is very important when using this ship because she has poor concealment and surprisingly her armor is extremely weak and can take a lot of citadel hits from enemy ships even from destroyer HE shells. For more information visit: {https://na.wows-numbers.com/ship/4183799792,Ranger/}

Pros:

  • Best Attack Aircraft that are armed with high explosive rockets in her tier
  • Largest Dive Bomber hanger in her tier
  • Fastest Dive Bomber plane restoration in her tier

Cons:

  • Slow planes with average health and restoration
  • Only drops 3 High Explosive Bombs
  • Only drops 2 torpedoes with average damage and low speed
  • Very weak citadel and hull plating making her very easy to sink
  • Arguably one of the weakest carriers at her tier

Research

  1. Upgrade to SB2U Vindicator (Dive Bombers) for extra 3 bombers and a 3rd bomb per attack run.
  2. Upgrade to TBD Devastator (Torpedo Bombers) for 1 extra attack run per squadron.
  3. Upgrade to F4F Wildcat (Rocket Attack Aircraft) for 4 more rockets per attack run
  4. Upgrade to Hull(B) for better AA and hitpoints of the CV itself
  5. Proceed to the Lexington

Optimal Configuration

Upgrades

The recommended upgrades for Ranger are as follows:

Commander Skills

It is recommended to use Alexander Ovechkin for improved Survivability Expert.

Note: Hidden Menace states that your planes reach safe altitude at 50% lower height which is not true because your planes are still vulnerable to flak, therefore the skill is bugged and not recommended.

Consumables

The consumables available for the ship and each plane type are:

Ship

Attack Aircraft

Torpedo Bombers

Dive Bombers

Signals

As a carrier, Ranger has no risk of detonating.

Note: Carriers burn at 1% health per a second while all other ships burn at 0.3% a second. So even though Carriers burn for only 5 seconds for each fire, if caught off of DCP, multiple fires can be set over and over again making a carrier lose more health to fires than any surface ship within a short duration.
