Huron — Commonwealth special premium Tier VII destroyer.
Named for the Huron people of the Northeastern Woodlands of North America, HMCS Huron was the third out of eight Canadian Tribal-class destroyers. She was laid down at a shipyard in Newcastle in 1941. The ship served within the 3rd Destroyer Flotilla and, as part of it, participated in escorting six northern convoys in 1943 and 1944. In the spring of 1944, she was engaged in operations against French coastal positions, and in 1945, she escorted convoys to Murmansk again.
Huron was first released for sale on 10 August 2022.

The Ship
Tier VII Huron takes Haida and applies an open water gunboat flavor in place of the crawling smoke usually associated with Commonwealth ships. She has good main battery DPM at the expense of fewer torpedoes. While she shares a common origin with Haida, changes to her consumables and gun parameters mean she plays differently. Despite these changes, she still fills the same tactical role of hunting enemy destroyers.
Huron shares the same hull as Haida, with changed detection parameters. With 6.9 km base surface detection, she lacks Haida’s stealth but is still one of the stealthiest ships at Tier VII. With Concealment Expert her detection can be reduced to 6.2 km. When Huron is top tier she will be one of the stealthiest ships in the game, but she is often outspotted when uptiered. Her top speed of 36.5 knots means she trails behind many destroyers at her tier. This can be mitigated by her Engine Boost consumable which pushes her top speed to 39.4 knots for 120 seconds. It has 3 charges and a 120 second cooldown between uses. Her agility is merely adequate — with a 3.8 second rudder shift and 630 m turning radius she sits squarely in the middle of the pack. However, as Huron has the same improved acceleration as British destroyers, players can fit Steering Gears Modification 1 to reduce her rudder shift time to 3 seconds.
In her other consumable slots, Huron mounts a Hydroacoustic Search and a Repair Party . Unlike other Commonwealth and British destroyers, Huron uses a standard Hydroacoustic Search with an action time of 100 seconds. This will detect ships at 4 km and torpedoes at 3 km. While it lacks Haida’s extended action time, it is more useful in pushing enemy destroyers out of their smoke screens. It has 3 charges as standard with a 120 second cooldown between uses.
With 15,700 hitpoints, Huron has a good amount of health for a Tier VII destroyer. Her Repair Party has two charges as standard and allows players to heal 10% of her health per use. If both charges are used effectively, she has a total potential health pool of 18,840.
Armament
Huron mounts three twin 120 mm guns in her main battery. Although they sometimes lack the raw power of the 127 mm guns found on other nations, they have a rather fast reload of 4.2 seconds, giving her high AP and HE DPM for a Tier VII destroyer. While she shares Haida’s 12.3 km range, she has slightly improved ballistics. Despite that, her shells still have a tendency to float at longer ranges, making accurate gunnery against maneuvering targets tricky.
Her AP rounds are rather typical of destroyer-caliber shells — at short ranges they can present a serious threat to broadside cruisers and destroyers. Compared to Haida, her shells retain better penetration over distance, meaning her AP rounds can remain a viable option outside of point blank ranges. Their penetration will still drop off with range however, and they will quickly lose effectiveness as medium ranges are reached.
Her HE rounds have some of the lowest damage per shell, and considerably less than Haida. Although they are relatively weak individually, her quick reload means that Huron is able to outdamage many other destroyers through sheer volume of shells. Despite her quick reload, Huron is merely average as a firestarter. Her HE rounds have a low 5% fire chance, so players should expect to start no more than 4 fires per minute in ideal circumstances.
Huron’s torpedoes are a potentially interesting weapon. She only carries a single quad launcher, which means that she cannot flood an area with torpedoes and limits the threat she poses to larger ships. However, these torpedoes are similar to those carried by Cossack at Tier VIII and are some of the hardest-hitting weapons at Tier VII. With an 8 km range, they can be a useful tool for long range harassment of battleships despite their limited number. They will be spotted at 1.4 km and allow more than 8 seconds for targets to take evasive action, one of the longest reaction times for torpedoes at Tier VII. Huron also retains Haida’s ability to fire her torpedoes individually or in a narrow spread. Experienced players can use this to good effect in narrow areas or for targeting multiple enemies with the same salvo.
Finally, Huron has a rarity among destroyers of any tier — a secondary battery. Although it only has a 4 km range and limited hitting power, the ability to gain a Close Quarters Expert achievement presents an amusing opportunity and marks those elite destroyer players.
Anti-Aircraft
Theoretically, Huron has improved AA defenses over many Tier VII destroyers, with a long range battery and some of the highest short-range DPM at her tier. In practice, her long range AA is too weak to do much more than advertise her position, and the short range weapons cannot engage until an attacking flight is already about to drop their weapons. Players are best advised to leave their AA turned off unless absolutely necessary. To add to her AA issues, the lack of a smoke screen means it can be difficult to avoid strikes from a determined aircraft carrier .
Anti-Submarine
Huron is one of the better ASW platforms at Tier VII with a combination of Hydroacoustic Search and powerful depth charges. She drops a pattern of 9 depth charges with one of the highest damages per charge, with two uses available and a 40 second reload for each pattern. A well-aimed drop means that a spotted submarine can be rapidly reduced to a permanently submerged vessel. Her Hydroacoustic Search allows Huron to detect a submerged submarine at 2 km.
Battle Performance
Huron fares rather differently if she is top tier or bottom tier. When she is top tier, players will be able to use her health pool and DPM to bully enemy destroyers. With effective planning, Huron can engage enemy ships one at a time in a series of short duels while using her Repair Party to recover health between bouts. When she is bottom tiered, she is vulnerable to being outmuscled by bigger boats as well as outspotted by several more capable gunboats. It is important to have an escape plan before engaging an unknown enemy as the lack of smoke will make it harder to disengage from a fight.
Engaging larger targets is a harder proposition. Without smoke to hide in, players will need to rely on island cover or fire from open water. Remaining at range and using constant rudder and throttle adjustments in combination with her Engine Boost will help keep her afloat. Her torpedoes can land some powerful blows, but having only four torpedoes limits their effectiveness against large targets.Pros:
- Good main battery DPM
- Engine Boost consumable
- Access to Repair Party consumable
- Decent concealment
Cons:
- Only one quadruple torpedo rack
- No Smoke Generator consumable
- Weak AA

Commander Skills
Huron works well with a standard destroyer build, Preventative Maintenance, Last Stand, Survivability Expert, and Concealment Expert should be the first choices. To fully maximize her performance, several high point skills are required. Skills which boost her gun performance are recommended. Taking Fearless Brawler, Main battery & AA Expert, and Superintendent is one potential build should players have sufficient skill points. Alternatively, Adrenaline Rush and/or Radio Location can be substituted for Fearless Brawler and/or Main battery & AA Expert.
