Combat Capability - Alternative Firing Modes

BurstFireModule.png
Yamagiri can alternate between a regular firing mode and a Burst Fire firing mode. Firing the guns with the alternative firing mode enabled will fire 3 salvos in quick succession. This firing mode takes much longer to reload.

Requirements:

Burst fire can be toggled on and off at will.

Effects:

  • Reload time: 30 seconds
  • Interval between individual shots: 1 second
  • Number of bursts in a series: 3

AlternativeTorpedoModule.png
Yamagiri can switch between Alternate Torpedo-Types in battle. Her type 1 torpedos travel faster but have less range than her type 2 torpedos. Yamagiri has alternative torpedo-type settings for both of her Type 93 and Type F3 torpedos. Torpedo-type can be switched at any time, even while reloading, but reload time will be suspended while switching takes place.

Requirements:

Alternative torpedo mode can be toggled at will.

Effects:

  • Torpedo-type switching time: 15 seconds
  • Type 93 torpedo type 1: 67knts, 12km range
  • Type 93 torpedo type 2: 64knts, 20km range
  • Type F3 torpedo type 1: 76knts, 8km range
  • Type F3 torpedo type 2: 62knts, 20km range

Yamagiri is the supership of the Japanese torpedo destroyer tech tree. She shares similar characteristics to Shimakaze, including the same torpedo armaments, Japanese smoke screen, and great concealment. She also gains the Alternative Firing Mode mechanic for her main guns and Alternative Torpedo-Types mechanic to switch torpedoes in battle.

Armament:

Yamagiri carries six 127 mm guns (the same guns as Hayate) housed in three double turrets. These guns have a short range of 12.1 km and a reload time of 4.5 seconds. The turrets on Yamagiri are slow, with a 180-degree turn time of 10 seconds. Her shells are identical to Shimakaze and Hayate — 2,150 damage, 21 mm penetration, and 9% fire chance for her HE, and 2,200 damage for her AP. Like the other torpedo-focused Japanese destroyers, her shells have good initial velocity but very long flight times. Her guns should primarily be used for self defense, or for farming from inside smoke screens and behind cover.

Yamagiri features the Alternative Firing Mode mechanic, which gives her a Burst Fire option. It fires three salvos in quick succession, at the cost of a long 30-second main battery reload. The Alternative Firing Mode should only be used to finish off targets or damage targets when disengaging, as that long reload time leaves her very vulnerable.

Yamagiri carries eighteen torpedoes in three sextuple launchers. She also features the Alternative Torpedo-Type mechanic, which allows her to switch torpedoes in battle, at the cost of 15 seconds in switching time. Players can choose 2 configurations in the port. The first, Type 93 mod. 3, has 20 km Type93 Improved torpedoes and 12 km Type93 mod. 3 torpedoes. The second option, Type F3, carries the 20 km Type93 torpedoes, as well as the fast 8 km Type F3 torpedoes. At first glance, it seems that only the 12 km and 8 km torpedoes are changed, however the first configuration carries 20 km Type93 Improved torpedoes that deal 23,767 damage, while the second configuration carries Shimakaze’s 20 km Type93 torpedoes that deal 20,967 damage.

The 20 km torpedoes have good speed and high damage, at the cost of a very high detectability range. The 12 km torpedoes are considered the most universal, with good speed, high damage, and decent detectability range. The 8 km torpedoes are very fast and deal good damage, at the cost of very low range. While switching torpedo types is an interesting feature, the configuration with 12 km torpedoes is the most universal and versatile setup, due to having much more balanced characteristics. When fully built for torpedoes, Yamagiri has a long torpedo reload time of 100 seconds, and players must be thoughtful of when and where they launch torpedo salvos.

Consumables:

Yamagiri comes with a standard Smoke Generator consumable, with a 20-second action time and 97-second dispersion time. The smoke screens have a long cooldown of 160 seconds, so it is vital to utilize them when disengaging from unfavorable fights. The smokes can also be used to cover allies, but leaves Yamagiri vulnerable to plane spotting and enemy destroyers. Her Engine Boost is standard, providing an 8% increase to her maximum speed, with a 120-second action and cooldown time.

Hull:

Yamagiri has a good base health pool of 22,200, and a base speed of 39.5 knots. It is recommended to always take the commander skill Survivability Expert, as it bumps her HP to a healthy 26,050. Her maneuverability is similar to Harugumo and is poor, with a mediocre 4.8 second rudder shift and a large 800 meter turning radius. Yamagiri has best in tier concealment, with a minimum concealment of 5.6km. As the supership of the Japanese torpedo destroyer line, her hull is visually similar to that of Shimakaze. However, due to her poor maneuverability and large size, she is an easy target to hit, and is susceptible to torpedoes if not careful.

Anti-Aircraft:

Yamagiri has bad anti-aircraft capabilities. She has bad long- and short-range AA DPS (63 and 28 respectively), with 3 flak. As she will not be able to deal with planes effectively, players should turn off anti-aircraft guns and remain hidden from planes as long as possible.

Battle Performance:

Yamagiri serves the role of a torpedo-focused destroyer, with excellent concealment, heavy torpedo salvo weight, and self defense gun characteristics. Her torpedoes are excellent at denying key areas and attacking large targets. Her guns, while not impressive in terms of reload or damage per minute, can help kill destroyers with their decent alpha damage per salvo. The Alternative Firing Mode mechanic is useful to finish off low health targets, or to burst targets when disengaging with smoke or island cover. However, the long reload time of 30 seconds leaves her very vulnerable to enemy destroyers until it finishes.

While her armaments are similar to that of Shimakaze (with the addition of the Alternative Firing Mode mechanic), it is important to note that Yamagiri has worse maneuverability and can struggle to dodge torpedoes and maneuver during knife fights. She should remain hidden through usage of her excellent concealment in order to outspot and gain positional advantages against enemy destroyers. While not her primary role, Yamagiri can contest key areas with usage of her concealment. Players should always reverse into cap circles and be ready to maneuver away from torpedoes, radar, and planes.

While the addition of the Alternative Torpedo-Types mechanic is interesting, 20 km torpedoes are not very practical due to their high detection and long reaction time, allowing enemy ships to dodge. The configuration of 12 km and 20 km torpedoes is preferred, due to the inflexibility of 8 km torpedoes in the presence of radar cruisers, aircraft carriers, and submarines.

Pros:

  • Good HP pool
  • Good Fire chance
  • Access to Alternative Firing Mode: Burst Fire
  • All torpedoes have good damage and speed
  • Access to the Alternative Torpedo-Types mechanic
  • Excellent concealment
  • Access to Engine BoostWhile active, increases a ship's speed by a fixed percentage.
  • Access to Smoke GeneratorWhile active, generates a smoke screen that blocks line-of-sight for both enemies and teammates.

Cons:

  • Large target
  • Bad main battery reload time
  • Poor shell velocity
  • Long torpedo reload time
  • Mediocre rudder shift time
  • Poor turning radius

Research

Although Yamagiri is a top-tier ship, she has one upgrade choice:

Torpedoes: Yamagiri equips the Type 93 mod. 3/Type 93 Improved torpedoes by default. Alternately, she can equip the Type F3/Type 93 torpedoes.
