Cassard — French Tier X destroyer.
Cassard was a T-47-class destroyer in the first series of French destroyers built after the war. She was a further development of the Le Hardi class with larger dimensions and dual-purpose main armament. The primary function of the T-47-class ships was to escort aircraft carrier squadrons; as a result, they had moderate speed. As part of the French squadron, Cassard participated in resolving the Suez Crisis of 1956. Most of the ships in the series were decommissioned from the Navy in the 1980s.

Player Opinion
Performance
Performance
Topping off the French torpedo destroyer line, Cassard improves on her predecessors with harder hitting torpedoes. Her survivability also increases with more health and the same signature French destroyer damage saturation.
Armament:
While primarily a torpedo-focused destroyer, Cassard gets a significant boost to her main gun DPM over her predecessor Orage. The guns are near identical to French destroyer Marceau, with one less turret in a 3x2 setup. The fast reload time and decent fire chance can make it enticing to build Cassard for her main battery, but in practice is not a great idea. She has poor firing angles, requiring her to show lots of broadside when firing, combined with a slow base speed and the same floaty shells found on Marceau. The guns are best used for self defense while kiting away from enemy ships, especially since 2 turrets are placed towards the rear of the ship. Cassard will struggle to outgun dedicated gunboat destroyers, and must rely on her concealment and speedboost to disengage. Like Marceau, Cassard can fire over islands as another way of dealing damage.
Cassard’s true strength is her fast, hard hitting torpedoes that have a unique damage drop off mechanic. When the torpedoes hit targets, the damage dealt depends on the distance traveled. Within an 7 km distance, these torpedoes hit very hard at 24,267 alpha damage, with damage dropping off past that point. These torpedoes have a good range of 13.5 km but damage falls off heavily, dealing slightly less damage than Halland at max range.
Like the other high tier French destroyers, Cassard is equipped with 4 launchers, two on each side of the hull, that carry 3 torpedoes each. This allows for a playstyle similar to Benham, dumping torpedoes from each side and retreating away during torpedo reloads. This also means Cassard can stagger launch torpedoes in specific situations. A big difference in torpedo armaments when compared to the other Tier X French torpedo destroyer, Unique Upgrade Kléber, is the longer base torpedo reload time of 120 seconds.
Hull:
While the other high tier French destroyers have high base speed and the signature French 20% Engine Boost, Cassard is a slow destroyer with 34 knot base speed. This problem is somewhat offset by a 30% Emergency Engine Power consumable but leaves her vulnerable when it’s down. The hull is big but has a tight turning radius, allowing her to dodge shells at range.
Cassard’s greatest strength as a torpedo destroyer besides her torpedoes is her minimum concealment of 6.1 km. This gives her a 2 km window where her torpedoes will deal their highest damage, and allows her to stay in close proximity to enemy ships as long as radar or aircraft are not present. However, it is still not the best concealment relative to other torpedo destroyers and some gunboat destroyers, so players must be wary and plan ahead to disengage when spotted.
Consumables:
As mentioned briefly above, Cassard has the Emergency Engine Power consumable that increases her speed by 30% to a respectable 44.2 knots for 90 seconds. The consumable has a 90 second cooldown and comes with 5 charges. The speed boosts should be used frequently to disengage, rotate positions, or chase ships when needed.
Cassard has no other consumables except for the standard Damage Control Party . As she has no disengagement tools aside from her speed and concealment, players should only fire when necessary and if they are able to safely disengage behind islands or allied smoke screens
Anti-Aircraft:
While she was built to be an Anti-Aircraft destroyer in real life, Cassard’s anti-aircraft defenses are very weak, with low DPS across all ranges and only producing 3 flak. As her AA range is 6 km but her air concealment is 3.5 km, it is best to leave her anti-aircraft defenses off and only turn them on when being actively attacked by planes. In games with carriers, it is best to not stray too far from allies so she can retreat into allied AA auras to discourage carrier strikes.
Battle Performance:
Cassard is a unique take on a torpedo destroyer with variable damage based on distance. Her torpedoes are the hardest hitting destroyer torpedoes in the game, but only when they have traveled less than 7 km. Their high speed and long range of 13.5 km can still yield some damage at long distances.
The next best comparison is torpedo build Kléber with her Unique Upgrade, which also puts her concealment at 6.1 km. The biggest difference is the base speed, with Cassard lagging behind at 34 knots. Cassard also puts emphasis on harder hitting torpedoes below 8 km (which is the maximum range of Kléber’s torpedoes) but a much longer reload time.
As a torpedo destroyer, Cassard cannot take gunfights with dedicated gunboat destroyers and can struggle against torpedo destroyers due to her bad gun angles, awkward turret layout, and long shell flight time. When chasing enemies, she has to show lots of broadside to get all her guns on target, and loses engagements due to being easily hit. While her guns are much more usable when kiting, she also cannot out DPM dedicated gunboats and thus should not seek to take direct 1v1 knifefights.
Experienced players can make good use of her hard hitting torpedoes and lofty shell arcs. But for new players and those just getting into destroyers, Cassard can be difficult to play effectively due her situational speed boost and lack of a smokescreen or high speed to disengage with.Pros:
- Pros
- Fast firing main battery
