Special

Lüshun — Pan-Asian special premium Tier X destroyer.

From 1949 through 1956, a scientific and technical support program was in effect between the U.S.S.R. and P.R.C. Under this program, among other things, the Soviets shared the blueprints of promising warships with China. In particular, China received technical documentation on a Project 41 destroyer. While China didn't build any ships of this project in its original form, between 1968 and 1987, they built fifteen 051-class (Luda-class) missile destroyers that were based on the Soviet Project 41.

Lüshun was first released for completing all 35 Stages of the Tan Yun Dockyard on 16 August 2023.

Overview

Tier X premium Pan-Asian destroyer Lüshun provides an experience that is in sharp contrast to her tech tree counterparts. The tech tree destroyers have smokescreens with average duration and cooldown times, torpedo reload boosters, and below-average firepower. Lüshun is heavily gun-focused, with a consumable kit that is focused on defensive play at the cost of her torpedo power.

Hull

Lüshun’s hull is exactly the same as Tier IX destroyer Neustrashimy, with slightly worse concealment. With optimal captain skills, Lüshun has a hitpoint pool of 24,000, which is average for a Tier X destroyer. But with the use of Heavy Repair TeamsRestores a significant part of the ship's HP. Repairing damage takes a long time., Lüshun has the highest effective HP value out of any destroyer at Tier X. Her excellent concealment can reach as low as 5.8 km, which allows her to outspot the majority of destroyers at her tier. The same cannot be said about her mobility. While Lüshun has an average rudder shift time and turning circle, she is one of the slowest destroyers at her tier, only going around 36 knots without an Engine BoostWhile active, increases a ship's speed by a fixed percentage.. Every other destroyer at Tier X besides Forrest Sherman has either an engine boost or improved acceleration. As a result, Lüshun is a sluggish ship that takes time to accelerate and loses lots of speed when making turns. Her poor handling and relatively high hull profile make her prone to taking large chunks of damage when exposed.

Firepower

Lüshun’s main battery provides a comfortable experience at any range of engagement, but excels in long range combat when compared to her peers. Captains who have experience with Soviet destroyers would feel right at home playing Lüshun, as she provides above-average damage output, comfortable ballistics, hard-hitting armor piercing shells, and consistent fire-starting potential. Lüshun’s guns are some of the fast firing of any Tier X destroyer, spewing out four shells every 1.7 seconds. Her turrets have good traverse speed, comfortable firing angles, and can rotate 360 degrees, allowing her to quickly respond to a variety of targets. Lüshun’s high explosive shells are uncharacteristically weak for their caliber dealing a paltry 1,400 damage per shell. Her low shell damage and small salvo size gives her some of the lowest salvo damage of any Tier X destroyer. Her HE shells also have the lowest fire chance for its tier, with a 5% chance per shell. Despite Lüshun’s poor alpha and fire chance, her exceptional rate-of-fire gives her above-average HE damage per minute and average fire starting capability. A similar story can be said about Lüshun’s armor piercing shells, as they also have poor alpha damage for their caliber. Still, Lüshun’s AP shell alpha of 2,200 damage is average for a Tier X destroyer and does far more damage than her high explosive shells. Her AP shells have high penetration values, and can easily damage vulnerable sections such as the bow, stern, upper belt, and superstructure of most broadside cruisers and battleships. Due to Lüshun’s high rate of fire, she also has some of the highest AP damage per minute for a Tier X destroyer. Most importantly, that high penetration allows her damage output to be effective at all ranges, whereas some of her rivals would struggle at medium to long range.

As expected of a Pan-Asian destroyer, Lüshun carries Deepwater Torpedos that are a great complement to her excellent main battery guns. Lüshun carries two quintuple torpedo tubes that have comfortable firing angles and fast traverse. The range, reload, damage, flooding chance, and speed of her torpedoes are average for a Tier X destroyer, but she makes up for it by having best-in-class torpedo detectability. Enemy vessels will have minimal time to react, but at the cost of being unable to hit destroyers and submarines. Lüshun’s torpedoes are a welcome addition for a gun-focused destroyer, but captains shouldn’t invest into them as it would greatly cut into her excellent gun performance. Those looking for a torpedo-focused playstyle would be better served by playing the tech tree destroyer Yueyang with her improved torpedo parameters and Torpedo Reload BoosterWhen used, torpedo reload time is significantly reduced. consumable. Lüshun’s torpedoes should be used against targets that her main battery guns have a hard time with, such as heavily armored ships or in situations where it is too dangerous to use her guns.

Anti-Aircraft

Lüshun’s anti-aircraft suite is quite lacking for a Tier X destroyer; her long, medium, and short-range auras all deal low damage. While her anti-aircraft battery is good enough to shoot down fighter planes placed by carriers, it is woefully inadequate at deterring strike planes. This is a huge problem as she has no effective way to disengage from a determined carrier player. Lüshun’s lack of Smoke GeneratorWhile active, generates a smoke screen that blocks line-of-sight for both enemies and teammates. and her sluggish maneuverability opens her up to taking heavy damage from carrier strikes or enemy ships aided by carrier spotting. It is vital to be vigilant of the threat that aircraft can pose to the ship.

Anti-Submarine

Lüshun is not very good at damaging submarines, but has the right tools in order to spot them for allies. Her depth charges are among the worst for a Tier X destroyer, boasting a pitiful alpha of 1,700 damage, poor flooding and fire chance, and an uneven drop pattern that makes it challenging to get accurate hits. Lüshun even struggles to engage a retreating submarine due to her poor speed and maneuverability. The inclusion of Hydroacoustic SearchWhile active, detects all enemy ships and torpedoes within the specified radius, without regard of obstacles such as smoke and terrain. in her toolkit allows her to potentially spot submarines that other destroyers wouldn’t, but it is preferable to use it in a defensive manner to protect herself and nearby allies from enemy submarines.

Consumables

Lüshun’s toolkit is defensively-focused with an emphasis put on long term sustain. Her Heavy Repair TeamsRestores a significant part of the ship's HP. Repairing damage takes a long time. consumable is unique among destroyers and functions similarly to Sevastopol. With the optimal loadout, Lüshun is able to restore 8,640 hitpoints over a 60-second timespan. With her three base charges, she has at least 25,920 hitpoints worth of healing potential over the course of a full game, allowing her to have the highest theoretical health pool of any Tier X destroyer. However, it takes 60 seconds to get the full value of restoration, and the consumable has an extremely long cooldown time of two minutes. Lüshun’s repair party is best used as a defensive tool to sustain hitpoints over the course of the game rather than being used offensively to engage enemies. Quite a few destroyers and most cruisers at the tier have the capability to completely whittle down Lüshun’s health in the duration of her repair party. In an engagement, her health restoration is too slow to give her a meaningful advantage compared to the faster-acting heals of other destroyers. Lüshun carries a Hydroacoustic SearchWhile active, detects all enemy ships and torpedoes within the specified radius, without regard of obstacles such as smoke and terrain. that is similar to the one on Loyang and Siliwangi, boasting a ship detection range of 5.5 km and torpedo detection range of 3.8 km. Captains can use this in an offensive manner to push enemy destroyers out of their smoke screens and deal damage. However, it can be a challenge to secure kills against faster ships that disengage due to her poor speed. Captains should not get carried away with using the consumable in unfavorable situations, as pushing in just to get some value from it can easily lead to her death. Instead, her Hydroacoustic SearchWhile active, detects all enemy ships and torpedoes within the specified radius, without regard of obstacles such as smoke and terrain. is best utilized in a defensive manner to protect herself and her allies from the threat of torpedoes and submarines. With her poor acceleration, slow speed, and poor energy retention, enemy torpedoes fired in her direction pose a significant threat, as she will have a hard time dodging them if she is caught unaware. The improved torpedo acquisition range from her Hydro gives her a comfortable buffer and plenty of time to react to oncoming torpedo threats. It also has the added benefit of spotting submarines that are surfaced or on periscope depth up to 5.5 km away and getting assured spotting of submarines at 2 km regardless of depth. This is quite helpful for defending herself and closeby allies from submarine attacks.

Gameplay

Lüshun can be built as a front line destroyer or a long-range gunboat depending on the gameplay preferences of each captain. While she can perform front line cap contesting and screening due to her excellent concealment, it is not her best role as she has no way to hold ground with smoke, has subpar maneuverability and speed, and can easily be focused down at closer ranges. Her ideal playstyle is as an open water gunboat that excels at medium-to long-range engagements. It is preferable to let an allied destroyer play for the objectives while she supports them with artillery fire at a distance. Her torpedo battery is an excellent complement that allows her to deal large burst damage to targets that are either heavily armored, or are too dangerous to engage with guns such as cruisers and battleships. Utilize these tools to repel enemies and secure flanks. Once a flank is secured, start rotating to other objectives and whittle down enemies with her main battery and torpedoes. It is imperative to choose favorable engagements that do not result in a quick trip back to port, as her Heavy Repair TeamsRestores a significant part of the ship's HP. Repairing damage takes a long time. provides loads of sustain only if she does not take heavy damage in a fast time frame. To get maximum value out of it, use the consumable at the beginning of a direct engagement and not when it’s over as she will take damage at a rate faster than the consumable’s duration. This helps to reduce the effective cooldown time of the heal and can help captains get more opportunities to use all charges during the match. When engaging other destroyers, captains should use their Hydroacoustic SearchWhile active, detects all enemy ships and torpedoes within the specified radius, without regard of obstacles such as smoke and terrain. to mitigate the threat of incoming torpedoes. It can be used offensively against destroyers that cannot outgun her and do not have allies nearby to directly support them. When fighting destroyers with superior firepower, it is important to lengthen the range of engagement by giving ground and kiting away. Doing this step as well as variably changing ship speed helps make Lüshun a harder target to hit without compromising much on firepower due to her excellent ballistics. Captains should be mindful of their ship’s survivability and do everything in their power to avoid taking unnecessary damage while finding ways to have impact during the duration of a match.

Overall, Lüshun is a comfortable Tier X destroyer that is easy to use for players of all skill levels, but heavily rewards careful and considerate play.

Research

As a premium ship, Lüshun has no module upgrades to research.

Optimal Configuration

Upgrades

The recommended upgrades are:

There isn’t much variety when it comes to optimal upgrades for the Lüshun, as she is primarily locked into a gun-focused role. For the first slot, Main Armaments Modifications 1 is vital in order to keep her artillery and torpedoes from getting knocked out during the heat of battle. For Slot 2, Captains can choose between Engine Room Protection or Hydroacoustic Search Modification 1 in order to have better protected engines and rudder, or a longer-lasting Hydroacoustic SearchWhile active, detects all enemy ships and torpedoes within the specified radius, without regard of obstacles such as smoke and terrain.. Being an artillery-focused ship, Aiming Systems Modification 1 is an easy pick for Slot 3, as Lüshun’s torpedoes are a secondary weapon that are only occasionally useful. Propulsion Modification 1 is the best upgrade for Slot 4, as it greatly improves her handling and acceleration, giving captains an easier opportunity to mitigate incoming damage. In Slot 5, Concealment System Modification 1 is recommended in order to enhance her base concealment. This allows her to outspot the destroyers at Tier X that can beat her in an artillery duel. Main Battery Modification 3 should be a no-brainer pick for Slot 6 in order to further enhance Lüshun’s excellent main battery.

Commander Skills

There are two possible commander builds for the Lüshun that focus on concealment or main battery range. All of the one, two, and three-point skills remain consistent for both builds, with the only differentiating factor being the 4-point skills that players choose.

Preventative Maintenance at Level 1 and Last Stand at Level 2 are easy recommendations for Lüshun commanders. Both are crucial for any destroyer, as they reduce the probability and severity of engine or rudder failure. Losing steering or engine power during the heat of battle is likely to cost captains their ship, so it is imperative that they are protected.

Level 3 offers a number of good options. Survivability Expert is an easy pick, buffing Lüshun’s health pool by 16% and additionally increasing the amount of total hit points she can recover with Heavy Repair Teams. Main Battery & AA Specialist and Adrenaline Rush are recommended for captains looking to get more damage out of their main battery. Superintendent is not the strongest option for the Lüshun as the vast majority of matches do not last long enough for captains to get value from having a fourth charge of the Heavy Repair Team.

Fearless Brawler is recommended as the first Level 4 skill as it provides an easy 10% decrease to the reload time of her main battery guns. Since Lüshun has no Smoke GeneratorWhile active, generates a smoke screen that blocks line-of-sight for both enemies and teammates., shooting her main battery guns will guarantee her detection, which activates the skill. Captains that are looking to play as a front line destroyer will require Concealment Expert in order to achieve concealment values competitive enough to play on the front line. Captains that want to play as an open water gunboat should forgo concealment for Main Battery and AA Expert in order for her guns to shoot ships at longer ranges. Even though her minimum concealment goes from 5.8 km to 6.4 km, it doesn’t really affect her overall playstyle as Lüshun shouldn’t really be taking closer range engagements in the first place.

Consumables

Lüshun equips the following consumables:

Camouflage

As a premium ship, Lüshun comes with Default permanent camouflage and a set of permanent combat bonuses.

Signals

Victor Lima (+1% chance of causing a fire for bombs and shells with a caliber above 160mm / +0.5% chance of causing a fire for bombs and shells with a caliber below 160mm. / +4% chance of causing flooding.) and India X-Ray (+1% chance of causing a fire for bombs and shells with a caliber above 160mm. / +0.5% chance of causing a fire for bombs and shells with a caliber below 160mm.) are worthwhile picks to increase the firestarting chance of Lüshun’s main battery shells. Juliet Whiskey Unaone (+15% chance of causing flooding.) is recommended in order to increase the flooding chance of her torpedoes.November Foxtrot (-5% reload time on all consumables.) is useful for cutting down the long cooldown time of her Heavy Repair Team and getting her Hydroacoustic Search up faster. India Delta (+20% to the amount of HP recovered when the Repair Party consumable is used.) is a must have as it greatly increases the amount of hit points her Heavy Repair Team restores per charge. Sierra Bravo (+10% Hydro action; =10% DAAF reload.) extends the action time of Lüshun’s Hydroacoustic SearchWhile active, detects all enemy ships and torpedoes within the specified radius, without regard of obstacles such as smoke and terrain. by 10%.
