Summary
Mecklenburg is a Tier X battleship sharing many similarities with Friedrich der Grosse and Brandenburg. However, Mecklenburg is distinguished by her speed, resulting from the inclusion of a powerful propulsion system. She also has a main armament consisting of sixteen 305 mm naval rifles with high sigma and battlecruiser dispersion, along with close-range torpedoes for self-defense.
Armor
Mecklenburg is a heavily armored battleship not atypical from other German ships of the type. She has a turtleback armor layout, initially consisting of a 350 mm belt of armor along the waterline, serving to protect the citadel from incoming fire at most angles and ranges.Mecklenburg has a belt of 50 mm deck armor amidships to protect against plunging fire and low caliber shells. Additionally, Mecklenburg has 32 mm of fore and aft end-plating along with a 70 mm thick ice-breaker along the waterline. No incoming shells are capable of overmatching the lower hull armor affixed to the bow. However, the fore, aft, and stern decks only have 32 mm armor plating, possibly leaving the citadel vulnerable to plunging shells of at least 460 mm caliber, which are capable of overmatching that armor.
Mecklenburg has a large superstructure protected by only 19 mm of armor, making deck structures an easy target for enemy destroyers and lightly armed cruisers. Compared with other Tier X German battleships, Mecklenburg has lighter armor, making her more vulnerable to low caliber shell penetrations upon impacting her armor belt, despite a similar shell impact resulting in a non-penetration had it impacted Grosser Kurfürst or Preussen. Mecklenburg’s ice-breaker resembles the ice-breaker on Schlieffen.
Armament
Mecklenburg rivals Cristoforo Colombo for the most guns affixed to any Tier X battleship, consisting of 16 rifles in a 4x4 layout. Without upgrades, these rifles are capable of firing at a base range of 22 km, which is greater than most German Battleships. The base reload time of 26 seconds can be further improved with Main Battery Modification 3 . The reload time and numerosity of her guns mean that Mecklenburg has the highest damage per minute of all Tier X battleships (347,077). However, the rifles are only 305 mm caliber, which results in a drastically reduced chance of overmatching armor. Accordingly, when an enemy ship is angled to Mecklenburg, high-explosive is a better option to reliably deal damage.
Mecklenburg’s amor-piercing (AP) and high-explosive (HE) shells deal the lowest damage of any Tier X battleships. Per shell, AP may deal up to 9,400 hit points of damage, while HE may deal up to 3,600 hit points of damage. The chance of starting a fire with HE is only 27%. Despite her seemingly low-damage output per shell, Mecklenburg makes up for the deficiency with her quick reload speed, 2.05 sigma, and battlecruiser dispersion. Accordingly, Mecklenburg is quite accurate when compared with other German battleships.
Mecklenburg sports an exceptional secondary armament featuring improved accuracy, range, and penetration. The secondary armament consisting of twenty-four 128 mm rifles in a 12x2 layout with a maximum range of 12.6 km. The 128 mm caliber shells are capable of penetrating up to 32 mm of armor without modification. Although better than most battleships at her tier, other Tier X German battleships are better equipped, carrying more than twelve secondary turrets.
Finally, Mecklenburg is equipped with a torpedo armament, allowing her to launch up to four torpedoes per side with a range of 6 km. They are identical to those found on battleships such as Tirpitz and Pommern and deal a maximum damage of 13,700 hit points each. Similar to Tirpitz and Pommern, the angle at which the torpedoes can be fired is restricted, with the forward firing arc limited at 35 (degree symbol) and the aft arc limited at 40 (degree symbol). This requires Mecklenburg to expose her broadside to effectively launch her torpedoes at enemy targets.
Anti-Aircraft
Mecklenburg is outfitted with a strong anti-aircraft armament (AAA) as compared to other Tier X German battleships. Her long range AAA is somewhat underwhelming, dealing only 165 hit points in continuous damage at a max range of 6 km. This is contrasted by her mid-range AAA, which will fire at aircraft within 4 km of the ship, dealing up to 375 hit points of continuous damage. As a last defense, short range AAA will deal up to 340 hit points of damage to targets at ranges up to 3 km. To strengthen and aid in the efficacy of mid to long-range air defense, Mecklenburg can fire up to eight bursts of flak per salvo at ranges between 3.5 km and 6 km. Instead of Hydroacoustic Search , Mecklenburg has access to Defensive AA Fire , which can be used to temporarily increase the efficacy of her AAA by 150%, making her a formidable threat to enemy aircraft.
Battle Performance
German battleships are renowned for toughness and perseverance in close and mid-range engagements. However, Mecklenburg is best-suited to longer-ranges. Her 305 mm main battery guns are less likely to overpenetrate armor, meaning that HE shells are often a better choice to ensure consistent damage output, especially when an enemy battleship is angled. However, her AP is sufficiently capable of punishing cruisers exposing their broadside due to the large number of shells per salvo, high accuracy, and lower likelihood of over penetrating their lighter armor. Mecklenburg should be positioned to support other battleships, setting up crossfires when possible. By utilizing her base firing range of 22 km, Mecklenburg can keep the distance while working to damage enemy cruisers and battleships before pushing in. Should Mecklenburg find herself in close-combat, the improved secondaries and torpedoes will aid in self-defense while the main gun turrets are turning or reloading.Pros:
- Good accuracy with 2.05 sigma and battlecruiser dispersion (rare for German ships)
- 16 accurate guns with a quick reload time and fast shell speed make it very consistent.
- Both HE and AP are usable and should be switched often.
- While the fire chance per shell is not great, due to the large amount of shells per salvo it is a decent fire starter
- 4 short range Torpedoes on each side for emergency brawling situations
- Fairly fast and a decent rudder shift make it maneuverable for a BB.
- Good German armor scheme makes the ship difficult to citadel.
Cons:
- Terrible firing angles, by far the worst of any Tier X BB (even the GK)
- AP shells have the lowest penetration and overmatch due to the ships small caliber 305 guns. This is somewhat made up for by sheer shell amount, but citadels will be rare against more heavily armored opponents, especially at longer ranges. AP should only be fired when a target is broadside (or against light cruisers). Salvos against angled heavy cruisers and battleships will be disappointing.
- Low HP pool.
- No Hydro (usually standard on German BB's)
- Middle of the pack concealment and range.
- Much like the GK and Preussen, the ships armor scheme makes it hard to citadel but also very easy to full pen. This combined with a low HP pool makes giving broadside very dangerous, but also must be done often due to its poor firing angles.
- Plays best at mid to long ranges. Brawling is not recommended due to multiple factors. The ship needs to show a lot of broadside to fire all guns, the low gun caliber, low health pool, low secondary DPM and no Hydro.
