Scarlet Thunder is a Tier IX premium British battleship and is the traditional battleship counterpart to Tier IX battlecruiser Duncan.
Armament:
Scarlet Thunder carries nine 419 mm guns in three triple turrets. These guns have a range of 19.7 km. Her AP shells have low alpha damage of 11,500, but can overmatch up to 27 mm of armor, which is present on many cruisers in her matchmaking spread. They also have a shortened fuse time of 0.015 s, which is useful against cruisers as it reduces her chance of overpenetrating their armor. Her HE shells have a 48% fire chance, 105 mm of penetration, and high alpha damage of 7,200.
Scarlet Thunder’s guns use the standard battleship dispersion formula and a sigma value of 1.9 compared to Duncan’s battlecruiser dispersion with lower sigma. The guns have an average reload time of 30 seconds, which can be reduced to 26.4 seconds with the Main Battery Modification 3 upgrade.
Her turrets have a 180-degree turn time of 36 seconds. Her turret layout is unique, as her third turret is positioned in the middle of her superstructure. This limits her rearward firing angles and reduces her effectiveness when kiting, but gives her comfortable forward firing angles.
Unlike Duncan, Scarlet Thunder does not have access to torpedoes.
Survivabillity:
Scarlet Thunder’s hull is relatively thinly armored, with her bow, stern, and deck covered with 32 mm plating. While this is resistant to most battleship AP shells, most cruiser HE shells will still penetrate it. Scarlet Thunder’s citadel is vulnerable, as it is large and sits high out of the water. Captains must be careful when showing broadside against enemy battleships and large cruisers.
Scarlet Thunder does not get access to Specialized Repair Teams of the tech tree British battleships. She uses the standard battleship Repair Party, recovering 14% of her health over 28 seconds with an 80 second cooldown.
Her minimum surface concealment is very good at 12.2 km. She has an average HP pool of 75,200, but her torpedo damage reduction is low at only 22.9%. With her excellent surface concealment and mediocre armor, Scarlet Thunder captains should play her at medium and long ranges.
Maneuverability:
Scarlet Thunder has a good base speed of 32 knots but does not get access to the Engine Boost consumable. Her 9.75-second rudder shift time is great, however her 910 m turning radius is quite poor. Her speed allows her to reposition when needed.
Scarlet Thunder does not get the enhanced acceleration found on British destroyer, light cruiser, and battlecruiser lines but can mount Propulsion Modification 1 .
Anti-Aircraft:
Scarlet Thunder’s AA DPS is relatively poor overall, but she has a high mid-range DPS of 626.5, which increases to a best-in-tier 939.8 DPS with the Defensive AA Fire consumable. She produces seven flak clouds that deal low damage. Her high mid-range DPS can shoot down planes but cannot stop strikes entirely. Grouping with allied ships to overlap anti-aircraft auras is recommended in games with carriers.
Battle Performance:
Scarlet Thunder is a mid to long-range battleship that likes to play angled away on her flank, setting enemies on fire and punishing broadside targets with her short fuse AP. Her decent speed allows her to reach positions and react to the current battle situation. Her low detection allows her to play closer to enemies and hit more shells while remaining concealed when necessary. Both shell types should be utilized throughout the battle depending on the current situation, but it should be noted that the AP alpha damage is quite poor.
Unlike the tech tree battleships and battlecruisers, Scarlet Thunder cannot resist as much damage with her 32mm armor and lack of the Specialized Repair Teams consumable. Players must be wary to not be under focus fire and avoid exposing her vulnerable broadside.
Scarlet Thunder is essentially a traditional British battleship with Duncan’s visual appearance. She is designed to hold flanks and pressure enemies with accurate high alpha HE salvoes.Pros:
- High alpha damage HE shells with improved penetration and fire chance
- Shorter AP fuse time
- Strong medium-range AA DPS
- Decent speed
- Great ruddershift time
- Great concealment
Cons:
- 32 mm plating everywhere
- Vulnerable citadel
- Low torpedo damage protection
- Low AP alpha damage
- Does not have torpedoes
- Poor long range AA DPS
- Does not get access to the Specialized Repair Teams or Engine Boost consumables
