Duke of York — British special premium Tier VII battleship.
A King George V-class battleship that carried 356 mm main guns, and could run at quite a high speed for a ship of her type. Numerous dual-purpose artillery served as a basis for the ship's AA defenses. A very successful gun fire control system provided for high accuracy of fire of the ship's main battery.
Duke of York was first released for sale worldwide on 20 December 2017.

HMS Duke of York is the third Tier VII premium British battleship in World of Warships, coming in alongside the previously released HMS Hood and HMS Nelson. Unlike the other two — which are quite unique — Duke of York is the sister ship of the regular tech tree Tier VII battleship, King George V. Many of Duke of York’s statistics are similar, if not identical, to that of her sister; as such, her play style is also very similar.
Duke of York is armed with ten 356 mm guns in a unique setup; two quad turrets — one fore and one aft — and a single dual turret in a forward super-firing position. This gives her unrivaled firepower to the front and rear of her ship in comparison to all other Tier VII battleships. This good forward and backwards firepower comes at the cost of atrocious turret angles, requiring her to show almost a complete, flat broadside to her enemies to fire all ten rifles at a target. Her guns themselves are nearly identical to that of her sister, with the exception of a longer reload. Like all British battleships, her guns have lackluster AP in exchange for phenomenal HE shell characteristics, including the ¼ HE penetration rule, allowing her to do massive damage and light fires to all targets with HE. One unique though relatively meaningless difference is that her AP shells have increased penetration angles akin to those found on US Heavy Cruisers.
Duke of York features an identical armor scheme to that of her sister; 25mm plating around the entire ship, and a hefty main belt with a maximum thickness of 381mm. Her belt armor is very capable of bouncing large caliber shells when properly angled, while her 25mm plating makes her extremely susceptible to HE shells from enemy cruisers, even without the use of the Inertia Fuse for HE commander skill. Like all battleships below Tier VIII, she features a 25mm bow, allowing her to be overmatched by gun sizes over 380mm. Taking citadel penetrations through the bow is very common, so proper angling is a must.
The accuracy however leaves much to be desired. The main battery accuracy is on par with German and Italian battleships, meaning that salvos can get frustratingly inaccurate at times. Mounting Aiming Systems Modification 1 can help, although players will be tempted to make the ship's already potent anti-aircraft suite more powerful with AA Guns Modification 1 . It is up to the player depending on their playstle; better main battery performance or a stronger anti-aircraft defense.
The major differences between Duke of York and King George V come in the form of anti-aircraft firepower and consumables. Duke of York features a greatly enhanced AA suite; with the proper commander skills and upgrades, her AA can be very powerful. Duke of York has access to the Hydroacoustic Search consumable, making her more resistant to torpedo attacks.
Overall, Duke of York is essentially a King George V that sacrifices main battery reload for increased anti-aircraft firepower, Hydroacoustic Search , and premium bonuses.Pros:
- High base AA DPS.
- Ability to use Hydroacoustic Search .
- Uses British battleship HE shells with high fire chance and damage.
- Enhanced heal compared to most battleships, healing up to 75% of normal penetration damage.
- Strong armour belt.
Cons:
- Very poor gun angles, must expose significant broadside to fire the rear turret, or the fore turrets to the rear.
- Longer reload than King George V, resulting in decreased damage output.
- Cannot equip catapult aircraft.
- Most AA DPS is short-range, limiting effectiveness in practice.
- Very slow rudder shift time for a Tier VII battleship.
- Battleships with guns of 356 mm and above can penetrate her citadel through the bow.

Upgrades
The recommended upgrades for Duke of York are as follows:
- Slot 1: Auxiliary Armaments Modification 1
- Slot 2: Damage Control System Modification 1
- Slot 3: AA Guns Modification 1
- Slot 4: Damage Control System Modification 2 *
The majority of Duke of York’s anti-aircraft power is found in her 40mm "pom poms" and 20mm Oerlikons, both of which are highly vulnerable to incoming high explosive shells. As such, Auxiliary Armaments Modification 1 earns the recommendation in Slot 1. Slot 4 could also be filled with Steering Gears Modification 1 for captains looking to improve her rudder shift speed.

Signals
As a ship with a good AA battery, November Echo Setteseven ()is the best option for the ship. After that signals helping the survivability of the ship, such as India Delta (), India Yankee (), or Juliet Yankee Bissotwo () are always helpful. To increase her offensive capabilities, signals such as Sierra Mike (), and November Foxtrot () will be useful.
