Bungo — Japanese Tier X battleship.
After revising the development plan of the Japanese Navy, new battleships and battlecruisers were ordered. This is how Project L emerged—an expanded version of Project A, which became the Kii class. She also had five main battery turrets housing 457 mm guns. However, the project's displacement exceeded that of the Kii class by 9,000 tons, resulting in a cost surge. The emergence of both the Kii class and the mentioned ships was prevented by the Washington Naval Conference, which resulted in a temporary ban on the construction of battleships and limited their total tonnage.
Bungo was first released for Early Access on 11 October 2023 with Update 12.9.

Performance

Tier X Japanese battleship Bungo is the culmination of the gameplay developed over the line. She gains increased offensive capabilities over Adatara, with improvements to her artillery and High-Precision Spotter.
Armament:
Bungo carries ten 457 mm guns housed in five twin turrets. These guns have a range of 25 km. Her AP shells have high velocity and can overmatch 30 mm armor, which is present on many cruisers in her matchmaking spread. However, her penetration and alpha damage are low for 457 mm guns, comparable to Montana’s 406 mm guns. Her HE shells have a 35% fire chance, high HE alpha of 7300, 77 mm of penetration, and slower velocity. Due to this, it is recommended to fire HE only against angled battleships and destroyers. The slower velocity also means players must take more lead when firing HE.
Bungo’s guns are accurate, with good horizontal and vertical dispersion that is nearly identical to Yamato. She has a great sigma of 2.2, the highest of any battleship in the game. Her guns have an average reload of 30 seconds and a slower 45 second 180 degree turn time.
Her good accuracy is further increased with the High-Precision Spotter consumable, which increases her main battery firing range by 10% and decreases maximum dispersion by 20%. The spotter plane lasts for 65 seconds but has a reduced cooldown of 120 seconds. Due to these characteristics, Bungo can fire accurate salvos when the best opportunity presents itself and shortly follow up with another spotter plane.
Survivabillity:
Bungo’s hull is weakly armored, with her bow and stern covered with 25 mm plating. This allows every ship with a gun caliber of 358 mm or higher to overmatch it. Her deck armor is not much stronger at 32 mm, which will fail to shatter most cruiser HE shells. Bungo’s citadel armor is similar to that of Amagi, with a waterline citadel and an armored deck slope. It is better protected than some battleships, but she should still avoid showing broadside in front of battleships.
Her surface concealment is good, as low as 12.8 km. She has a smaller HP pool of 82,800 and a below average 35.8% torpedo damage reduction. As a result, Bungo captains should play her at medium and long ranges.
Maneuverability:
Even though her armor protection is not good, Bungo is not a particularly fast battleship, with a top speed of only 31.5 knots with the Sierra Mike combat signal. Her rudder shift time of 17.4 s is long and her turning radius of 960 m is poor.
Anti-Aircraft:
Bungo’s AA DPS is poor across all ranges. She has a high flak count of 8, but each flak burst deals less damage and her range is only 5.8 km. Grouping with allied ships to overlap anti-aircraft auras is recommended in games with carriers.
Battle Performance:
Bungo fills the classic Japanese sniper battleship role, with a couple of interesting features to differentiate her from the other Tier X Japanese battleships. The addition of High-Precision Spotter, fast shell velocity, 30 mm overmatch, and great concealment makes her ideal for sneaking up to ideal positions and killing cruisers. Against enemy battleships, her guns are less effective than other 457 mm battleships due to her lower penetration and alpha strike.
Bungo’s 25 mm bow and stern is susceptible to battleship AP overmatch through the front, and she must avoid drawing too much attention to herself. Her poor turning radius and low torpedo damage protection mean players should not seek close-quarter engagements too early.
Bungo is best played at medium to long ranges, creating crossfires and applying accurate salvos onto broadside targets. While her speed is not the best, her great concealment allows her to choose engagements and punish enemy ships.Pros:
- Good accuracy
- Good AP shell velocity and 30 mm overmatch
- High HE alpha damage
- High flak count
- Great concealment
- Access to High-Precision Spotter
Cons:
- Weak, easily overmatched bow and stern plating
- 32 mm plating everywhere
- Low HP pool
- Poor AA DPS with lower flak damage
- Poor turning radius and rudder shift time
