Background
With the hull of an oversized light cruiser, and the main battery guns of a heavy cruiser, Gibraltar is an ambush predator that can punish the broadside of any ship, thanks to shells that are less likely to overpenetrate or ricochet and use of her smoke generator.
The Ship
Gibraltar is an interesting mix of features from both the Tier IX Drake and the Tier X Minotaur with a couple of her own quirks. She has Drake’s hull shape and size, gun caliber and layout, Hydroacoustic Search, and a similarly larger concealment range. She borrows Minotaur’s built-in high acceleration, a Smoke Generator, an armor scheme with an exposed, above-water citadel, and perhaps most important: Specialized AP shells in place of both HE and regular AP shells. This makes for a ship that plays like a British light cruiser, but packs the punch of a heavy cruiser.
Armor and Survivability
Gibraltar is relatively fragile in relation to other heavy cruisers, namely her Tier X Goliath. They have the same 25mm bow and aft plating and similar general hull shape. But where Goliath has a 203mm armor belt, in addition to torpedo protection spacing and 38mm plating on her citadel; Gibraltar has an exposed citadel, with 152-178mm armor plating, which also constitutes her armor belt. This means Gibraltar is much more prone to having her citadel penetrated, even by light cruisers and some destroyers especially at closer distances. Whereas Goliath has a chance to negate some of that damage with the multilayered, spaced armor. Gibraltar carries a standard Repair Party as opposed to the Improved or Specialized Repair Teams common on most high tier British Ships. In addition, she has a generally large hull that presents a big target which takes a lot of damage when it gets hit. Her Hit point pool is fairly large at 59,400HP, therefor a standard repair party will heal just over 8,316HP, with three charges. Overall her survivability is on the weaker side of heavy cruisers and captains should be very wary about going toe to toe with other heavy cruisers, unless she has a substantial situational advantage or can remain unspotted through use of her smoke screen.
Armament
Gibraltar carries twelve 234mm guns in three quadruple turrets. These only load a Specialized form of AP normally only found on the British light cruiser line. For those unfamiliar, these shells have a reduced fuse threshold and fuse time, in addition they have increased penetration angles. In game, these shells will overpenetrate and ricochet less often than regular AP, adding up to many shells being full penetrations, dealing higher damage. Gibraltar has good accuracy, and a quick reload, though is somewhat hampered by poor firing angles especially when kiting. If captains are comfortable in their aim and with memorizing enemy armor layouts, they will be able to utilize Gibraltar's high damage potential to great effect. One large drawback is the lack of HE; she can struggle against bow in battleships and some cruisers, although she can still deal damage through most superstructures, these are engagements captains will want to avoid. Overpens are rarely an issue even on destroyers due to a very low fuse arming time on her shells.
Maneuverability and Concealment
Gibraltar has above average maneuverability albeit with a slightly lower top speed. She has a built-in acceleration increase, meaning she can take the Steering Gears Modification 1 module, giving her a good rudder shift time. Her top speed of 32kts before any modifications is slightly below average for a Tier X heavy cruiser. Her turning radius is slightly above average. Gibraltar’s concealment is fairly good. If captains take the relevant concealment skills and modifications, she can have a relatively small concealment range of 11.5km, and deploy her own smoke to further limit visibility. Her detection radius after firing her main guns in smoke is 9.2 km, which is large compared to light cruisers, but is better than standard for her gun caliber. This means captains will want to either use islands to limit line of sight to ships within her smoke firing penalty, or to have longer engagement ranges to avoid being detected while shooting from within her smoke.
Anti-Aircraft and ASW
Gibraltar’s AA suite is slightly below average for her tier, and her ASW armament is the standard depth charge airstrike for her tier. Her long range AA has a range of 5.8km, and the damage is average at 113 continuous damage. Her medium range AA has a range of 3.5km, dealing 299 continuous damage, slightly below average for her tier. And the short range AA has a range of 2km dealing 107 continuous damage, significantly below average for the tier. Gibraltar further defends herself with an average flak output, with 5 flak clouds each dishing out 1610 DPS. Her depth charge airstrike consists of two strikes, reloading every 30 seconds, reaching out 8km, each dealing average damage for her class and tier. On par with other Tier X heavy cruisers. All together, this means she should stick with her teammates when being targeted by aircraft, and when submarines are close as she will struggle to defend herself on her own.
Battle Performance
Gibraltar is an interesting ship; having access to the Smoke Generator consumable and large 234mm guns that only shoot the Specialized AP shells of the British light cruiser line. She can play like a heavy cruiser, dealing high damage to more heavily armored ships from range, but she also excels playing more aggressively, closer to friendly destroyers where she can utilize her Specialized AP shells and large guns to deal incredible amounts of damage to destroyers with every salvo. Although her hull is prone to taking damage, her smoke generator and hydroacoustic search allow her to take unique positions and ambush unsuspecting ships with her huge salvo damage. The volume of fire and consistency of her shells in combination with a smoke generator and hydroacoustic search makes Gibraltar a formidable ambush predator that can take unique positions and punish unsuspecting enemies.Pros:
- 12 guns that deal huge single salvo damage
- Specialized AP shells, which are less likely to overpen or ricochet
- Smoke generator and Hydroacoustic search
- Good concealment maneuverability
- Solid health pool
Cons:
- Big, poorly armored hull
- Large, exposed citadel
- Standard repair party
- Lacks HE shells
- Poor smoke firing detection penalty
Research
Optimal Configuration
Gibraltar is a ship that likes to control its engagements while lacking some survivability, therefore captains should seek to maximize her concealment, and increase her survivability.
Upgrades
These upgrades keep her guns operational more often, increases her ability to spot torpedoes and enemies, improves accuracy, builds on her mobility and concealment, and lastly improves her main battery reload.
The recommended upgrades are:
- Slot 1: Main Armaments Modification 1
- Slot 2: Hydroacoustic Search Modification 1
- Slot 3: Aiming Systems Modification 1
- Slot 4: Steering Gears Modification 1
- Slot 5: Concealment System Modification 1
- Slot 6: Main Battery Modification 3 or Gun Fire Control System Modification 2
*In Slot 2, Captains should take Hydroacoustic Search Modification 1 if possible to lengthen the action time of Hydroacoustic Search .
Commander Skills
These skills aim to give commanders the best tools to control their engagements.
Consumables
Gibraltar equips the following consumables: These cannot be changed, but they are a great selection of consumables.
- Slot 1: Damage Control Party
- Slot 2: Repair Party – 3 charges
- Slot 3: Hydroacoustic Search – 3 charges
- Slot 4: Smoke Generator – 3 charges
Camouflage
As a premium ship, Gibraltar comes with Default permanent camouflage and a set of permanent combat bonuses.
