Ernst Gaede — German Tier VI destroyer.
In 1933, the construction of flotilla destroyers began, and it was planned for them to surpass their same-type counterparts owned by other nations in speed and firepower. In March 1933, AG Vulcan Stettin released a design proposal for a "conventional London Naval Treaty" destroyer featuring a displacement of 1,500 tons. Later, the project underwent revisions, resulting in an increased displacement of 2,000 tons. Nevertheless, the Kriegsmarine leadership favored an alternative project, which served as the basis for the subsequent development of the Type 1934 ships.

Player Opinion
Performance
The Ernst Gaede is a vast improvement to its predecessor, the T-22, although it does retain some characteristics from her. The Ernst Gaede still only has four guns to work with, however these guns are much larger and much more effective than the guns found on the T-22. There are two different caliber of guns to choose from, a set of 128mm guns and a set of 150mm guns. Her 128mm guns provide a quick rate of fire which may be further enhanced by the captain skill Basic Firing Training, while her 150mm guns pack an incredibly large punch that will quickly eat through lightly armored enemy ships. However, the 150mm guns have a slower rate of fire and slower turret rotation speed than the 128mm guns, but the latter may be offset by taking the commander skill Expert Marksman. Her torpedoes are a slight improvement to her predecessor's, with the upgraded torpedoes having 8.0km range. This allows some room for the Ernst Gaede to fire torpedoes from stealth, even if the ranges to work with are narrow.
She is also the first destroyer in the German destroyer line to have the Hydroacoustic Search consumable, although this is only found on the upgraded hull. Her Hydroacoustic Search has the same acquisition ranges as the non-German cruisers, which allows her to play very aggressively and ambush enemy targets hiding in smokescreens or behind terrain as well as screening for enemy torpedoes and contesting capture points. Compounded with the hard-hitting 150mm guns, the Ernst Gaede can launch vicious surprise attacks on enemy destroyers and eliminate them from the game. While her detection may not make ambushes the most logical of actions, taking advantage of terrain and the enemy's positioning will allow for successful attacks.Pros:
- 150mm guns are absurdly powerful for a destroyer.
- Can deliver torpedo strikes from beyond her detection range.
- Torpedoes are fast with good range and hitting power for Tier VI. Her upgraded torpedoes are the same ones found on Admiral Graf Spee.
- Largest health pool of all Tier VI destroyers.
- Gains access to the Hydroacoustic Search consumable (B Hull Only!).
Cons:
- Sub-par handling characteristics for a destroyer: slow rudder shift and a turning radius larger than some Tier VI cruisers.
- 150mm guns traverse even slower than the 128mm ones after accounting for captain skills.
- Large detection radius (on par with Farragut).
- Longest torpedo reload time of all Tier VI destroyers.

Upgrades
Like most destroyers, Ernst Gaede captains will want to plug Main Battery Modification 1 into Upgrade Slot 1 and Propulsion Modification 1 into Upgrade Slot 4. Gaede’s handling characteristics make Steering Gears Modification 2 in Upgrade Slot 5 an attractive (and popular) choice; otherwise, captains should reach for Propulsion Modification 2.
Upgrade Slot 2 offers either Aiming Systems Modification 1 or Main Battery Modification 2. With the 128mm guns, Main Battery Modification 2 is probably the best bet — especially if her commander has the Tier 1 skill Basic Firing Training — to provide the biggest boost to her turret traverse for a very small loss of reload speed. Captains who opt for the 150mm guns may wish to use Aiming Systems Modification 1 instead to improve her accuracy and — given her slower reload speed — make every shot count.

Consumables
Ernst Gaede can equip the following consumables:
- Slot 1: Damage Control Party
- Slot 2: Smoke Generator
- Slot 3: Engine Boost
- Slot 4: Hydroacoustic Search
As with all destroyers, captains are encouraged to invest the credits (or doubloons) in Damage Control Party II () to ensure the ability to extinguish fires and repair broken engine or rudder modules more quickly. Whether or not to equip premium versions of other consumables is up to individual captains.
Camouflage
Type 1, 2, or 5 camouflage can be equipped for credits; Types 1 or 5 are recommended at a minimum to reduce detectibility range.
Players who wish to spend doubloons can equip Ernst Gaede with Type 16 camouflage that lowers her detection radius, reduces the accuracy of incoming shells, and increases the amount of experience she earns.
Signals
The choice of which Signal Flags to mount will confer to the individual preference of each captain, and are subject to great variation, although there are certain flags which suit Destroyer gameplay better. Captains should mount India Yankee to decrease time to extinguish fires, mount November Foxtrot to decrease reload time of consumables, and mount Sierra Mike to increase the ship's maximum speed. To make their torpedoes more potent, captains should mount Juliet Whisky Unaone to increase chance of causing flooding and Juliet Charlie to mitigate risk to magazine detonation from mounting the former flag. If captains wish to buff their primary artillery, they are encouraged to mount Victor Lima + India X-ray to increase fire chance to HE shells.Gallery
