Shimanto — Japanese Tier VIII cruiser.
The development of the Mogami-class cruisers into anti-aircraft defense cruisers, which implied mounting dual-purpose 150 mm guns developed in 1944 as the main armament. The mounting of these and 100 mm AA guns would make it possible to turn these cruisers into an effective weapon against American deck- and ground-based aviation.

Sitting at Tier VIII of the Japanese light cruiser line, Shimanto introduces captains to the capabilities — and drawbacks — of the 150 mm guns found on her and her successors, while retaining the line's trademark of great concealment, poor offensive capabilities and terrible maneuverability.
Hull
Having the same hull as her heavy cruiser cousin Mogami, Shimanto’s armor is anything but strong. Her 100 mm belt is easily penetrated by almost any gun she’ll encounter. With a 25 mm bow and stern, she is overmatched by 381 mm+ guns, highly prevalent at her tier spread. In addition, her deck is only 27 mm, allowing 406 mm+ guns to deal heavy damage to her. To make matters worse, her turrets are poorly protected, with their faces only reaching 25 mm, leading to frequent incapacitations. Shimanto’s only saving grace in her survivability is her HP. At 44,500, it is comparable to that of many heavy cruisers.
As if that wasn’t bad enough, Shimanto’s maneuverability leaves much to be desired. While her speed is a superb 34.5 knots, her turning circle is horrendous, at 830 m. Thankfully, her rudder shift is decent, at 8.1 s. Shimanto retains the typical outstanding concealment of most Japanese cruisers, with a 12.5 km base detectability, reaching 10.1 km when fully specced for.
Armament
Shimanto carries a large main battery, armed with 15 150 mm guns in five triple turrets. These guns have comfortable handling, being able to traverse a full 360 degrees (except for the No. 1 turret), as well as having one of the fastest turret traverse speeds in the game at a staggering 30 degrees per second. In addition, her guns have a decent firing range of 16.5 km, allowing her to engage targets quickly coupled with her turret traverse speed. Unfortunately, this is where the high points of her main battery end. While her alpha strike is high, her guns suffer a terribly long reload at 15 seconds. The firing range is hampered by the poor ballistics, making hitting targets difficult at long range. Finally, her AP shells are essentially worthless, with poor damage and penetration, only effective at point-blank range. Captains should stick to HE for dealing damage in most cases, and even then her overall damage output is dreadful.
Shimanto’s captains should forget about her secondaries. Though they do have a surprisingly high HE penetration of 30 mm, with only eight 100 mm secondaries in total, their impact will be little to none.
Shimanto’s torpedo armament is surprisingly mediocre. She carries one of the highest number of torpedoes of Tier VIII cruisers, with four triple mounts evenly split across her hull. Thanks to the Torpedo turning mechanic, her torpedoes have wide firing angles allowing for minimal hull exposure. They also have the characteristic high damage and flooding chance (20,967 and 355%[1] respectively) of most Japanese torpedoes, as well as a decent reload of 120 s and long range at 15 km. However, their high detectability and slow speed at 1.7 km and 57 knots each means enemy ships have a large window for avoiding her torpedoes. Given this, captains shouldn’t expect many torpedo hits against enemy ships who pay attention. The torpedoes will merely serve a secondary source of damage, provided they do hit targets.
Shimanto’s AA is underwhelming. While she has a high range at 6.9 km and a good flak count, the actual damage values are poor, as well as completely lacking medium-ranged AA guns. She can be an annoyance to aircraft — and indeed a significant threat to lower-tiered aircraft carriers — but against same-tier and higher aircraft carriers she cannot be relied upon to shoot down their squadrons.
Consumables
Shimanto’s consumable suite is mostly standard, with access to Damage Control Party , Defensive AA Fire and Hydroacoustic Search in the same slot, and Catapult Fighter in another. Given her poor AA, it is preferable to mount Hydroacoustic Search , using her fighters as a deterrent against enemy aircraft.
Gameplay
Shimanto is a difficult ship to play. Ideally, she should play as a kiter, keeping her enemies at an arm’s length with her range. Her poor armor means that this is her most effective way to play in a match. Her torpedoes should also be used frequently, given their decent reload, as a way of area denial and keeping enemy ships wary. Her good concealment will allow her to disengage when needed, but her maneuverability will hamper her in dodging shells and torpedoes. Shimanto should never be the one to lead a push, and should never be the center of attention. She relies on her allies doing the heavy lifting, while she provides support.
Shimanto’s capabilities are heavily limited by her armaments. Her gun performance leaves a lot to be desired and her torpedoes are lackluster. Many of her duties are done more easily by other cruisers — Amalfi has a higher alpha strike with amazing maneuverability; Harbin poses a greater torpedo threat thanks to her Torpedo Reload Booster , and Charles Martel can punish enemy ships easier with her longer range and Main Battery Reload Booster . Captains will find Shimanto a vastly underwhelming ship compared to the various Tier VIII cruisers, and indeed will find better performing cruisers in other nations.Pros:
- High HP pool for a light cruiser
- Large amount of guns with decent firing range
- Almost all turrets can rotate 360 degrees and have extremely fast turret traverse
- Great torpedo count, with high damage and range
- Torpedoes have wide firing arcs due to the Torpedo turning mechanic
- Good speed
- Good concealment
Cons:
- Abysmal armor
- Turrets are prone to incapacitation due to large size and poor armor
- Long reload on guns
- Low AP shell damage and penetration
- Poor ballistics
- Torpedoes have slow speed and high detectability
- Poor AA
- Terrible turning circle for a light cruiser
