Special

Tsurugi — Japanese special premium Tier IX battleship.

According to the Japanese Navy's new development plan, the projects of battleships and battlecruisers didn't differ much—battlecruisers featured the same speed as the Kii-class battleships. This went beyond the accepted Japanese naval tactics. To increase the speed and turn a project into a true battlecruiser, one of the main turrets could be sacrificed.

Tsurugi was first released for sale on 11 October 2023 with Update 12.9, and was initially available in 1 of 75 random doubloon bundles in the Armory.

Tier IX Japanese premium battleship Tsurugi leans even further into the battlecruiser archetype. Compared to her tech-tree counterparts, she trades survivability for mobility, as well as differences in firepower.

Hull

As a battlecruiser, Tsurugi’s armor is extremely poor overall. Her primary weakness is her citadel, which is an atrocious 305 mm thick, and covers most of her outer hull. As it is also exposed, any damage she receives while broadside is almost guaranteed to be citadel damage. Even many cruisers can citadel her, if they get close enough. Her deck is only 32 mm thick, leaving her vulnerable to all but the smallest HE shells. She also has a 25 mm bow and stern that can be overmatched by 380 mm+ AP shells, which includes most battleships in her matchmaking range. While her torpedo protection is strong at 42%, her HP pool of 69,700 is low. All of this combined means that Tsurugi should aim to minimize taking damage as much as possible.

Tsurugi’s maneuverability and concealment are on the other end of the spectrum. Her 35-knot top speed is excellent, as is her 11.5 km concealment when fully specced. This gives her unparalleled positioning ability compared to her peers, and she can respond quickly to situations that arise in battle. However, her turning circle is quite large at 970 meters. Combined with her poor 16 s rudder shift, Tsurugiwon't be able to respond without paying a severe price if caught broadside.

Armament

Tsurugi’s primary armament comprises six 457 mm guns in three dual turrets. Despite her large caliber, her AP shell damage and penetration are low, comparable to many 406 mm guns. However, her guns have a fast reload of 25 s, and excellent accuracy that is similar to Azuma. Along with her ability to overmatch 30 mm plating, she is a significant threat to cruisers. However, her penetration and alpha damage leave her at a disadvantage against battleships. Her HE shells have standard characteristics, and captains should only use them against destroyers or heavily angled battleships. Her guns have a high firing range of 23 km and good ballistics, allowing her to comfortably engage nearly any ship in battle. Tsurugi’s gun handling is decent, with good firing angles and a fast turret traverse of 36 seconds.

Tsurugi’s secondary armament consists of eight 127 mm guns and four 140 mm guns in double mounts. With their lack of improved range or dispersion, they should not be relied upon.

Tsurugi carries a single quadruple rack of torpedoes on either side. These torpedoes have similar traits to Asashio, with high damage, range, and flooding chance, as well as very low detection. With a 15 km range, she can launch them without being detected. This comes at the cost of being only able to hit battleships and aircraft carriers. They also have very poor firing angles, effectively only being able to be fired towards the rear. Due to this, they are best used to discourage enemy battleships from pushing. They can also prove useful if captains are forced into close quarters combat. Due to Tsurugi’s poor survivability and limited angles, however, she may not live long enough to use them at such distances.

Tsurugi has poor AA. Her 5.8 km range is decent, but her AA deals low damage. She also lacks any mid-range mounts. If under the threat of aircraft, captains should seek protection from allied ships.

Tsurugi carries standard Depth Charge Airstrikes for a Tier IX battleship. She has two charges with a 10 km range and 30 second reload. Each charge has one aircraft armed with two bombs that deal up to 4,200 damage each. Captains should make active use of this armament whenever there are signs of a submarine's presence nearby, such as fuel spills and sonar pings.

Consumables

Alongside her Damage Control PartyWhen activated, instantly repairs fires, floods, and incapacitations, and prevents more for the duration., Tsurugi carries a special variant of Repair PartyWhile active, restores a percentage of the ship's health points each second. that can heal back 33% of citadel damage received. This comes at the price of having one less charge than standard. She is also unique in having Torpedo Reload BoosterWhen used, torpedo reload time is significantly reduced., giving her the ability to launch multiple sets of torpedoes in quick succession.

Gameplay

Tsurugi plays as a highly mobile and stealthy glass cannon. Captains should use her great speed and concealment to take up advantageous positions. Enemy cruisers should be her primary targets, using her high rate of fire and accuracy to quickly kill them. Engagements against battleships should be taken with care, as her armor will not hold up to prolonged fights, and her lower AP penetration and damage leaves her at a disadvantage. Her firing range allows her to keep her distance from enemy ships, while her deepwater torpedoes will be useful in dealing extra damage against battleships should she be forced to engage them.

Tsurugi packs significant firepower, but this comes at the price of being heavily susceptible to any and all damage. Her playstyle is unforgiving, making her a difficult ship to play well for even veteran captains.

Pros:

  • Accurate, fast-firing main battery guns
  • Long main battery firing range
  • AP shells can overmatch 30 mm plating
  • Carries deepwater torpedoes with high damage and low detection
  • High top speed
  • Excellent surface concealment
  • Has access to the Torpedo Reload BoosterWhen used, torpedo reload time is significantly reduced. consumable
  • Repair PartyWhile active, restores a percentage of the ship's health points each second. heals back 33% of citadel damage

Cons:

  • Low HP pool
  • Poor amor, with an enormous, exposed citadel
  • Only 6 guns
  • Poor AP armor penetration and shell damage for their caliber
  • Deepwater torpedoes can only hit battleships and aircraft carriers
  • Underwhelming AA defenses
  • Large turning circle and poor rudder shift
  • Repair PartyWhile active, restores a percentage of the ship's health points each second. has one less charge
