In late July 1940 Gallant was assigned to the Mediterranean Fleet, sailing for Gibraltar on the 24th of July to join Force H, to join the screen of aircraft carrier HMS Argus until the end of August, where she was moved to the screen of aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious and battleship HMS Valiant to reinforce the British Fleet in the Eastern Mediterranean. Gallant returned Gibraltar via Malta in mid-September, remaining stationed around Gibraltar, where on the 20th of October she alongside destroyers HMS Griffin and HMS Hotspur were credited for the sinking of Italian submarine Lafolé, and on the 31st of October she joined the screen of Renown and battleship HMS Barham to monitor Vichy French naval movements off Morocco. Come November she was to be transferred to the Eastern Mediterranean Fleet, joining Barham again to sail for the Eastern Mediterranean, stopping over in Malta, On the 24th of November she screened battleship HMS Ramillies and accompanying ships being transferred out of the Mediterranean via Gibraltar. She was involved in the inconclusive Battle of Spartivento on the 27th, finally arriving at Alexandria on the 29th. She spent the rest of the year on screening duties, most notably screening Illustrious and battleships HMS Warspite and Valiant in mid-December. ? | Come 1941 Gallant had remained with Illustrious, Warspite and Valiant in Force H in the eastern Mediterranean, before hitting a mine on the 10th of January 1941, after the convoy was forced further south than planned. This mine blew off her bow, killing 16 and wounding 15. Her sister-ship HMS Griffin rescued the survivors, while destroyer HMS Mohawk towed her stern-first to Malta. She spent rest of 1941 slowly under repairs, not expected to be complete until June 1942. However, her hulk was heavily damaged in an air raid on Malta in April 1942, and she had to be beached to prevent sinking. She was judged a constructive total loss shortly after, with all usable equipment stripped off, with her hulk later expended as a blockship at St Paul’s Island in September 1943. She was stricken on the 5th of April 1942. | + | Come 1941 Gallant had remained with Illustrious, Warspite and Valiant in Force H in the eastern Mediterranean, before hitting a mine on the 10th of January 1941, after the convoy was forced further south than planned. Gallant — British special premium Tier VI destroyer.
During the Spanish Civil War, HMS Gallant—a G-class destroyer—spent considerable time in Spanish waters, enforcing the arms blockade imposed by Britain and France on both sides of the conflict. In 1940, the destroyer participated in the evacuation of Allied troops from Dunkirk and also escorted convoys bound for Malta. During one such convoy run, she was damaged after colliding with a mine. Gallant was towed to Malta for repairs, where she then suffered further damage during an Italian and German air raid. The damage was so extensive that it made the ship uneconomical to repair. In 1943, Gallant was scuttled as a block ship in the fairway to prevent possible hostile landings.
