?Atago was the first Tier VIII premium ship released for World of Warships and replaced Kitakami at the end of the Closed Beta. Bearing the same ABC-XY turret layout of her historical predecessor Myoko, this heavy cruiser is fairly similar to her predecessor, but improves on many traits such as turret traverse and overall handling. While her main battery rate of fire is slower, her torpedoes are quadruple tube mounts (for a total of 16 instead of 12) and the forward launcher on each side fires forwards instead of backwards, making it useful against enemies in front of the ship. She also gains access to the Repair Party consumable, allowing her to recover HP, unlike most other cruisers (at Tier VIII). Her impressively low detection range means that she can engage the enemy at her terms, and if situations go awry she can sneak away (providing there are no aircraft patrolling the sky or a nearby destroyer to detect her. With a full concealment build she can even fire torpedoes from beyond her detection radius in certain situations. She does have a few drawbacks, with a very large citadel hitbox — due to the large bridge/boiler area amidships — as well as a slow rate of fire and a mediocre anti-aircraft suite, but she is overall a very powerful ship.+AA Sidebar Warning Insert

?* Frequently has the initiative to fire first, potentially rattling enemies who are unaware of her current position.+* 41mm mid-deck armor. Can lead to large caliber shells occasionally bouncing off the deck at long range, as well as shattering HE shells from some cruisers.
?* Good handling characteristics.+* Heavy 10-gun broadside with an equally heavy HE alpha strike
?* As it is a premium ship, it earns more credits and any Japanese captain can be assigned to the ship without any penalties.+* Excellent gun accuracy, equal to that of Zao
?* Has the access to the Repair Party consumable, allowing for HP recovery like battleships and higher tier cruisers.+* Lethal HE shells with excellent fire starting capabilities and damage
?* Much wider torpedo launch arcs than regular tech tree Japanese cruisers; having 2 front-mounted and 2 rear-mounted allows for more flexible torpedo usage.+* 10 km torpedoes with excellent damage. With a full stealth build she is able to launch torpedoes while undetected.
?* Low detection range; with the Concealment Expert skill, the cruiser has an astonishing 9.2km detection range.+* Much wider torpedo launch arcs than regular tech tree Japanese cruisers; having 2 front-mounted and 2 rear-mounted allows for more flexible torpedo usage. Position of the forward torpedo launcher allows for bold plays against other cruisers
+* Very high speed, capable of a brisk 37 knots with Sierra Mike.
 +* Quick rudder shift.
+* Low detection range; with the Concealment Expert skill, the cruiser has an astonishing 9.3km detection range.
+* She makes a narrow target so can be difficult to hit if kiting away.
+* Has the access to the Repair Party consumable, allowing for HP recovery. Atago can have significant staying power late game compared to her contemporaries if it can avoid taking big hits.

 |Cons=<!-- write list of negative points below. use * as in ordinary wiki-list. --> |Cons=<!-- write list of negative points below. use * as in ordinary wiki-list. -->
?* Citadel is fairly easy to punch through; she cannot take a beating for a prolonged period of time.+* Citadel is vulnerable with easily overmatched extremities.
?* Torpedo tubes are likely to be hit and disabled by enemy fire.+* Modules -- notably the rudder, gun turrets and torpedo tubes -- are easily disabled under sustained HE fire.
?* Slowish turret traverse, however Expert Marksman mitigates this.+* Turret setup requires an uncomfortable amount of broadside to be given to fire all five guns.
?* Low rate of fire.+* Longest reload time of any Japanese 203mm gun at 16 seconds. <u>Adrenaline Rush</u> is a must-have skill.
?* Very mediocre AA suite.+* Mediocre turret traverse; however, <u>Grease the Gears</u> mitigates some of this.
+* Unremarkable AP performance, only usable against flat broadside cruisers.
+* Difficult to fire both torpedo launchers in quick succession due to the opposing orientation of the launchers. Almost flat broadside must be given to do so
 +* Terrible AA suite

?The module in Upgrade Slot 6 really dictates how Atago plays. With Target Acquisition Mod 1 equipped, she will likely be more comfortable in the main battle line alongside other allied battleships and cruisers. Most players, however, will choose to maximize Atago’s stealth by equipping Concealment System 1. Lowering her detection range makes her more survivable in general, and better equipped to hunt destroyers when necessary.+The recommended upgrades for are:
+* Slot 1: Main Armaments Modification 1 keeps the guns and torpedo tubes active and firing.
+* Slot 2: Engine Room Protection reduces the risk of incapacitation, and accelerates repairs of the engine and steering gears.
+* Slot 3: Main Battery Modification 2 lets her guns traverse faster. already has accurate guns, so ASM1's benefits are more marginal.
+* Slot 4: Steering Gears Modification 1 allows for a faster rudder shift to dodge incoming fire.
+* Slot 5: gets her detection down further allowing better stealth.

?The importance of Atago’s access to the Repair Party consumable cannot be overstated; it is highly recommended that captains spend the credits or doubloons on the premium version for the additional charge (and shorter cooldown).  With her last refit complete, Atago sailed to Singapore where she would join the First Mobile Striking Force and serve as the fleet’s flagship. The Japanese force departed on 22 October 1944 and sailed for Leyte Gulf. White en route to Leyte, the Mobile Force came under attack from two American submarines, USS Darter and USS Dace. Atago was hit by four torpedoes from Darter and despite attempts to keep the ship afloat, sank in the waters off Palawan Island. The First Mobile Striking Force would continue towards Leyte in an attempt to halt the American landings in the Philippine Islands, but would ultimately result in the loss of much of the remaining Japanese naval forces. With her last refit complete, Atago sailed to Singapore where she would join the First Mobile Striking Force and serve as the fleet’s flagship. Special

Atago — Japanese special premium Tier VIII cruiser.

Developed from the Myoko-class cruisers. When commissioned, Atago was one of the most powerful heavy cruisers in the world. The ship surpassed the speed of all Japan's potential rival cruisers. For her time, Atago was well-armored with efficient AA armament, along with powerful artillery and torpedoes.

Atago was the first Tier VIII premium ship released for World of Warships, replacing Kitakami at the end of Closed Beta.

Performance

Atago bears the same ABC-XY turret layout of her historical predecessor Myoko. This heavy cruiser is fairly similar to her predecessor, but improves on many traits such as turret traverse and overall handling. Her impressively low detection range means that she can engage the enemy on her terms, and if situations go awry she can sneak away (providing there are no aircraft patrolling the sky or a nearby destroyer to detect her). With a full concealment build she can even fire torpedoes from beyond her detection radius in certain situations.

She does have a few drawbacks, with a very large citadel hit box — due to the large bridge/boiler area amidships — as well as a slow rate of fire and a mediocre anti-aircraft suite, but she is overall a powerful ship.

Pros:

 • 41mm mid-deck armor. Can lead to large caliber shells occasionally bouncing off the deck at long range, as well as shattering HE shells from some cruisers.
 • Heavy 10-gun broadside with an equally heavy HE alpha strike
 • Excellent gun accuracy, equal to that of Zao
 • Lethal HE shells with excellent fire starting capabilities and damage
 • 10 km torpedoes with excellent damage. With a full stealth build she is able to launch torpedoes while undetected.
 • Much wider torpedo launch arcs than regular tech tree Japanese cruisers; having 2 front-mounted and 2 rear-mounted allows for more flexible torpedo usage. Position of the forward torpedo launcher allows for bold plays against other cruisers
 • Very high speed, capable of a brisk 37 knots with Sierra Mike.
 • Quick rudder shift.
 • Low detection range; with the Concealment Expert skill, the cruiser has an astonishing 9.3km detection range.
 • She makes a narrow target so can be difficult to hit if kiting away.
 • Has the access to the Repair PartyWhile active, restores a percentage of the ship's health points each second. consumable, allowing for HP recovery. Atago can have significant staying power late game compared to her contemporaries if it can avoid taking big hits.

Cons:

 • Citadel is vulnerable with easily overmatched extremities.
 • Modules -- notably the rudder, gun turrets and torpedo tubes -- are easily disabled under sustained HE fire.
 • Turret setup requires an uncomfortable amount of broadside to be given to fire all five guns.
 • Longest reload time of any Japanese 203mm gun at 16 seconds. Adrenaline Rush is a must-have skill.
 • Mediocre turret traverse; however, Grease the Gears mitigates some of this.
 • Unremarkable AP performance, only usable against flat broadside cruisers.
 • Difficult to fire both torpedo launchers in quick succession due to the opposing orientation of the launchers. Almost flat broadside must be given to do so
 • Terrible AA suite

Commander Skills

Consumables

Atago can equip the following consumables:

Camouflage

As a premium ship, Atago comes with Default permanent camouflage and a set of permanent combat bonuses.

Signals

Atago is one of the fastest Tier VIII cruisers in the game; a Sierra Mike (+5% to the ship's maximum speed.) signal is recommended for captains who are interested in maximizing that speed. Victor Lima (+1% chance of causing a fire for bombs and shells with a caliber above 160mm / +0.5% chance of causing a fire for bombs and shells with a caliber below 160mm. / +4% chance of causing flooding.), and India X-Ray (+1% chance of causing a fire for bombs and shells with a caliber above 160mm. / +0.5% chance of causing a fire for bombs and shells with a caliber below 160mm.) signals are also recommended. Victor Lima and India X-Ray add an additional 2% to the fire chance of her main battery high explosive shells.
